I made some shelves in my vinyl room a few years back, but I realized that I am a designer rather then a "doer", so I had my Vietnam Vet buddy, Dave Skoog, build me some new, straight and level and extremely load-bearing record shelves.



As you can see, the shelves are directly behind my Best glider/swiveling chairs, so all I have to do is turn the chair around and my favorite LPs are right there. There is also a light right above the shelves.

Now I could tell you that I planned all of this, but that would be a lie. It kind of all just happened, but it works really well.

Great job.  In my old house in the basement, I originally planned to put a pool table with a recessed spot into the unfinished area for pool cues.  I then decided I wouldn't use a pool table that much and recessed spots for the audio rack, DVDs, CDs and LDs into the wall.  Everyone used to think the LDs were LPs.  Yours is much more functional as they can be easily accessed while you listen.

Thanks! Yes it is funny.  The only thing that I actually planned to do with shelves in the old house that worked the way I planned it was to put a custom rack in one area for DVDs/Blu-Rays.  I didn't go to tons of trouble as by the time I started it I realized that it was just temporary (to keep all the media on the same level as the main system) as it was shortly after I started the rack that I decided to move.

Once one accumulates lots of media, it leads to decisions after a bit on where to store it.  I basically do file playback now (finished most of it before the move) as the new place really doesn't have wall space to do anything close to what I had in the old one.  The only media I have out (the rest are in closets and the music discs are readily accessible if I want them) now are Blu-Rays.  I probably have enough space for quite a while but I'm sure that a few years down the road it will be on my mind again.
