I wanted a change, seems like, as of lately, our Tucson group of audiophiles have been going on a buying frenzy. Once a month we have been listening to quite a range of new and used equipment and everyone's systems are evolving nicely and I'm stuck with the same old boring stereo. Since buying and remodeling a house 3 years ago with bills to be paid even $500 seems like an unnecessary and frivolous expense. What's a guy to do?

I have been using the KingRex UC192 for a while, it is a very serviceable and musical USB digital converter although not the last word in resolution, it is closer to warm sounding than analytical. Researching options I came across an intriguing post on the KingRex Facebook page:

Renamed KingRex UC192 DDC to UC384 DDC for better supportig.
Now KingRex UC192 DDC already being asynchronous USB DDC from 32bit/192Khz USB DDC to 32bit/384Khz USB DDC.
In its IIS output, it could direct stream asynchronous digital signal to 32bit/384Khz after inside firmware updating.
For help users know its ability, we are now annouced the UC192 renamed to UC384.
Old users of KingRex still could upgrade your UC192 to UC384 w/o any extra charges.

So hoping I don't turn the UC192 into a brick I first installed the dfutool then updated to the UC384 firmware, next I updated to the UC384_driver120531SV driver. Everything worked perfectly and now I have what seems like a totally new digital converter. Bass is tighter, highs are clearer, and the sound is dynamic with quicker attacks. A very nice upgrade and all for free.

A newer Windows 8 driver is available on the KingRex Support Page, since I use Win 7 I have not tried it. Also available is a 2013 firmware update but I think I'll quit while I'm ahead.

KingRex has similar model numbers so double check you are installing software for the UC384 and not the UD384.

I found only 1 review about the upgrade and the reviewer had mixed feelings but he was still running Windows XP and ASIO4All so his review is outdated.
