Eastern Electric M88 (on sale now). I got one used for a little more than a grand, which left another for tubes.  :D

Look at the AVA website.  The Ultravalve price has been reduced.  That and a passive volume control should work, unless you have a preamp in mind.

No one mentioned Jolida. The JD502 or maybe 302 should do a decent job. Even the 102b is an upgrade on the FX. Most of their amps are a bit lean through the mid-bass, but they are decent and I find them less bright than other options.

I have actually looked into Jolida, in fact I will be checking a few of their tube amps soon by a local brick and mortar store here in Chicago...  I am giving a serious consideration at Ayon products such as the Scorpion Integrated which is decently priced at $2,800 and its a true pure class A tube amp...

Wish you  were closer.. I'm going to be leting my modded JD302 CRC go  soon.
I upgraded the caps to Clarity MR series and added some early 60 's Amperex ECC83's, Mullard  CV4024's and Canada Fuller EL34's,   what a transformation.  It's a great little amp

As mentioned earlier in the  thread,  don't overlook the little chip amps with  a  decent pre in front of them. I've just picked up a Dodd pre and a prototype amp based on one of the smaller chip amps, about  10 wpc of  extremely linear  power . Both are running off a 50AH 12V battery/CTEK smart charger and  it is stunning.  I was extremely skeptical regarding the  low power but unless you are in a large room, it's plent (my room is  18' x 12').
the few folks who have now heard it  have all been  pretty much stunned
