14BSST-Clicking Sound?
« on: 23 Aug 2015, 11:57 pm »
I noticed this evening that my 14BSST has begun to make a clicking sound when powered up.

When I put my ear next to the amp I hear (i) a slight power 'in-rush' sound and then followed by (ii) a clicking sound. This repeats constantly while the amp is powered up. I took a quick iPhone video but I can't post it up here it appears.

The amp still seems to function properly and both channel indicators remain 'green' at all times (so, it's not that one of the channels is cutting out or anything).

Has this happened to anyone in the past? I'm trying to troubleshoot it before I go down the path of sending it back to Bryston for repairs since that's an expensive trip from my location. Maybe it's something that my local dealer can help with instead.

Cheers

Keith

Hi Keith

It is the soft-start circuit and is normal.

if there is a RELAY with the softstart, could be the reason for clicking constantly

bad connection or faulty RELAY could be the cause

anyway, if James says is normal,He is right. :D

James

This is not the initial soft-start sound. That happens on startup but then while the amp is powered up there is a constant in-rush/clicking that occurs repeatedly every couple of seconds or so.

I just pulled the amp out of the rack and peered inside the top vents. I can hear the  inrush/buzzing at the back of the amp but then there is a constant clicking at the front of the amp (and there is a green light flashing inside the amp (at the front) that corresponds to each click.) I can't see what the light is since the top is still on the amp. The inrush is not the same as at startup...it's more of a buzzing before each click.

This is not normal as my amps have always been completely silent at idle ever since I've had them. This only started happening tonight. Each click is clearly audible from across the room.

Here's a link to the video on youTube....

Just a follow up in case someone else has a similar issue in the future.

Mike got back to be and it appears to be an issue with the 'soft start' board not fully completing the cycle and constantly trying to recycle the soft-start system.

So, the amp will need to be shipped back to Bryston for some TLC.

Kudos to Bryston/Mike for the attention paid...as always.

Repair Followup

The amp arrived back home yesterday. The issue was a failed stand-by transformer in the soft-start circuit of channel #2.

Thanks to Mike for getting me back up and running.
