Help w/ soldering
« on: 19 Aug 2015, 10:22 pm »
Last spring I got Gary Dodd's permission to make a copy of a little amp he made for me several years back.  I got all my parts in and finally got started. But I'm having trouble getting these large ground wires to solder together.  Basically they are the size of household romex.  I've tried an 1800 watt gun, and my little soldering station, used Cardas solder, made sure every thing is clean, but it looks like I just can't get it hot enough.
Here is a picture of what Gary did.  Mine just balls up and falls away.

Get a nice dop on your iron, then gently place it with iron between them. The solder while not flowing will help transfer heat. If you start with iron on both you may not transfer enough, and pushing solder in is risky because it might not make contact. You may end up doing both, trying to have a lot of solder in there. It looks like Gary did this, cause it ain't pretty. Try to disconnect anything you don't need connected, that's easy to remove.

Don't go for looks.  Have a structurally sound connection before you solder.  Wrap one leg of the "T" joint around the other and crimp down tight, then follow Folsom's good advice.  When I need a joint like this I use my resistance soldering system....just 'cause I've learned!! ;-)

As Geary wrote.
With point-to-point projects, you should make good mechanical connections. The circuit should almost be able to work before you start soldering.

Good point guys, don't need a fight with the wires separating at the same time.
