For sale is a pair of black piano lacquer Onix Reference Three speakers rated at 7/10 condition that I'm selling for a friend. The crossover has been upgraded to a set that the Skiing Ninja built, and no rez has been added. There are a few minor scuffs on the baffle of one speaker, but cannot be seen with the grille attached.
The Vifa XT and top 7” Atohm woofer are used in a combined frequency range from 35 Hz to 30 kHz. The super tweeter does not come into play until 15 kHz, three quarters into the upper treble. The lower woofer does not kick in until 150 Hz, or within the top of the mid bass.
The Ref 3’s are natural and effortless in stock form, but they became an entirely new speaker once I upgraded the crossovers. There was a night and day difference in the presentation of the music in the stock vs the Ninja crossover. First off, the presentation of the voices is very different in the stock XO in that the voices appear to be set at the back of the sound stage instead of in front as you would expect during a live performance. More specifically, all of the details of each instrument come across clearly. The ‘live’ feel is so well presented because the Ninja crossover broadens the sound stage. This helps recreate the sense of space and volume of the original performance. There’s no masking of top end detail, no muddled midrange and more convincing slam on the low end. More importantly, the Ninja appears to give the listener the emotional impact the artist is attempting to project. Additionally, all instruments on the Ninja XO have a more natural feel about them. Overall, the Ninja was a major improvement in sound quality across the audio spectrum.
