Ripping CDs using headless linux server?
« on: 11 Aug 2015, 03:23 am »
I need to re-ripp some of my old CDs to FLAC and I'm looking for some recommendations how to do this via a headless linux server. I'm using OpenMediaVault which is Ubuntu based.
What I'm looking for is a program that I can rip at highest quality via command line or best of all just pop in the CD and it rips automatically.

Last time I ripped CDs was several years ago and I then used EAC to both FLAC, APE and mp3, which worked really well.

Any recommendations?

OK - starting to put down the list to look into if anyone is interested:
cdparanoia
-"cdparanoia is more or less the only secure ripper available for the Linux operating system and works best on drives that have the Accurate Stream feature and do not cache audio data"
-Many rippers such as abcde, dahphile uses the cdparanoia as back-end

Python Audio Tools

abcde
- guide: http://www.andrews-corner.org/abcde.html

RubyRipper
-secure digital audio extraction application ("cd ripper") for Unix-like operating systems. It uses cdparanoia error correcting power and its own secure ripping algorithm to make sure that a CD rip is done successfully and accurately. It is very similar to and inspired by EAC.

The most fun with looking for "old-school" CD ripping on Linux is that many sources are rather old - but my guess is that the tools are still just as good.

Here's for example a recent good-by note from one moderator for Rubyrip: "10-03-2014 I have decided to stop participating in this project. This leaves no active contributors at this time. Main reason is lack of motivation. I just don't see the need to rip cd's anymore. Streaming services like Spotify and Google Music seem to be so much less time consuming and much more convenient.

Kind of agree to some point since it is so tedious, but I have some international older CDs I can't find anywhere else.  :D So I just want a ripper where I just put a CD in and then beeps when done.

Thanks Ron!

Project got put slightly on hold since my burner started to have some issues. Yes, I wanted to check out some of the o/s based systems, but for now I would prefer to keep it as a separate application.

Found this great comparison on the vortexbox forum - starting to see a theme  :thumb: "Rubyripper(external link) is based on cdparanoia (the VortexBox ripper) and is inspired by and has many of the same features as EAC."

I've been using SoundJuicer to rip my CDs to FLAC.  I put in the disc and it fills in the track and artist tag info for "most" of my discs...you have to hit the extract button to start it though (no sure how that would work on your server).  I still go back and tag album art using EasyTag.  I wish there was an easier way that was even MORE automated...just haven't found it yet, and I'm happy with the quality of rips.

Maybe Vortexbox is the answer??

Odal3,

Although Vortex Box uses Fedora as a server, there should be no reason why you couldn't just install the packages from vortexbox to your Ubuntu server. There's nothin' special to their Fedora distro as far as I know. Most, if not all of the vortexbox app is just a GUI http server for all of the other command line packages.

So, Vortexbox is a relatively (completely?) automatic ripper?  I'm just wondering how much interaction I'm actually going to need in order to have my CD tags accurate and with cover art.  I have plenty of donor PCs that I could setup as a Vortexbox ripper.  As I said, SoundJuicer is working OK for my needs, but I have to edit the tags and add cover art for every rip.  That's proving to be a long and time consuming process since I have 800+ CDs that I'm trying to rip to FLAC.

This thread caught my interest because I have a vortexbox appliance (built by them as I didn't want to muck with setup) and am turning it into a dedicated ripper instead of also a server as I have a NAS for that.

I really like the VBA, as I open the tray, plop the CD (or DVD) in and it automatically does its thing.  It will grab all the data for your CDs and the cover art as well.  It is not always perfect.  Likely ~2% of my rips it couldn't find the data and your stuck doing it yourself.   If you setup the filing system and naming convention you want to use, you never have to mess with it again, although classical takes more contemplation on setup.

I goofed and reset the settings of my naming convention back to default, so I need to edit some of the data for a few dozen rips.  Haven't gotten around to it.   Also, by tagging, do you mean genre tagging, or the meta data for the CD?  I would like to use tags to organize my music collection (4-5k cds) by sub genres, often with multiple tags.  But that way I could select "alt country" and then hit random if I was in an alt country mood, or "progressive death metal", etc.

It really depends on the cd collection.
I do batch ripping using DB Poweramp and the All Music Guide tagging database.
With over 10,000 cds ripped I would estimate my error rate to be 2%-5%.
Keep in mind none were classical, but many were compilation and or various artist discs.

I use Tag & Rename to do tagging clean up after the fact.
