Got an upgrade notice from Jriver for early adopters. If you purchased upgrade 20 then no need to buy 21? Not fully understanding??

Thanks

You are using version 20 of JRiver  - there were 19 prior versions.  About once a year they offer an "improved" version - JRiver 21 is their newest.  However, if you are happy with version 20, there is no need to upgrade unless you feel the improvements in version 21 are something you want.
Sometimes there are improvements to sound - other times the upgrade seems to mostly cover video.  I upgrade every time - this latest is only $19 if I upgrade now.  It is worth it to me to just be on the same page as the developers.

From the jRiver website,
".....you can pre-order an upgrade to MC21 for $18.98 (normally $26.98) through July 25."

You must have your MC20 license key code available to be able to pre-order the upgrade.
I went for the upgrade, who knows it might sound better.

I went for the upgrade too - at $18.98 it won't hurt anything

Well for me, I would need to buy a Master License as I have both PC and Mac at home, though I may not need MC21 on all of them. So that would hit me for $25 which is more than half the price of the original MC20 license I bought six months ago.

Anyone have a link to details on what is "upgraded" in MC21? Can't seem to find any clear details.

JRiver has had 4x DSD and even 8x DSD support for quite a while now.

They have a quasi-subscription business model where about once a year, they increment version numbers and charge a modest fee to continue to receive updates. Unlike with most software, the new version number is not necessarily an indication of significant new functionality. JRiver releases enhancements and fixes (both major and minor) as they get them ready. It is not mandatory to upgrade to the new version.

They are generous with their licensing, providing several keys with one purchase so you can install the program on several computers.

Based on this very generic post from the JRiver forum, the initial plans for Version 21 don't seem to involve sound quality improvements.

Historically jRiver has not acknowledged that their player has any particular sonic characteristics, it has bit perfect playback and it plays almost any type of music file format and has been considered to be enough. Anecdotally speaking, I heard a substantial improvement between MC 19 and MC 20, I admit that hoping that MC21 might sound even better than MC20 could be an exercise foolishness but for $19 its a cheap investment.

There are no features yet. I think they will announce some planned features soon. Here is how I explained the licencse process at JRiver's forum with a little different perspective:

Its like age. JRiver is finishing its 21st "year" and will soon turn 21. Then it will start its 22nd "year."
Those who purchased an MC20 license received free updates for the entire 21st "year".
You now have a chance to celebrate MC21 by purchasing an MC21 license.
You will also receive free updates throughout its 22nd "year."

I was considering buying v20 recently and then the announcement for 21 came out.  JimH (owner?) mention in a thread that I had a v10 license.  I didn't remember buying it but I went to their site and was able to upgrade it to v21 for the $18.  ;)

I just upgraded.  Even if it sounds the same, the user interface is supposed to be better.
