Cable Gauge limit for remote triggers
« on: 8 Jul 2015, 02:51 pm »
Hi;

I'm curious what the max cable gauge limit is for the triggers on the amps and has it actually changed over the years and/or does it actually vary based on model? The reason I ask is looking through the various manuals I'm seeing different gauges mentioned so I don't know if that's really true or just inconsistency in the manuals.

I'm going to need longer runs when I split my 28's apart later this summer and my dealer gave me a 50' run of speaker wire to help me figure out how long my new interconnects need to be but aside from that I didn't think I had any use for the wire. But... if this 16 gauge wire will work for the triggers I'll simply use that. I don't feel like getting down behind everything at the moment and disconnect my current wires to see if this will work. Yeah, Yeah, I'm lazy. plus I hate those freakin' screw based trigger connectors :) Why oh why couldn't all of the triggers on all Bryston components have been the little mini jacks :(

Thanks,

Rod

The gauge of a typical 1/8"/3.5mm mini phone plug cable is probably in the 24 - 28 awg range.  There isn't a standard current spec for 12V trigger relays, but I suspect most are well under 100mA.

I think your 16 awg wire would be adequate for most any situation, as 16 awg wire with 12VDC and 100mA current will only have a voltage drop of 3.33% or .4V drop over 500 ft. !

hmm, I never even thought of it from that perspective so that's good info, thanks. I was just simply thinking are the wires going to be too thick to fit into the slots :)

Oh.  :oops:   Well that is a good question as the currently posted 28BSST² manual on the Bryston website says 18 - 22 "gage".  Conservative or absolute?  I'm hoping the next larger 16 gauge will fit, although I wouldn't expect 14 gauge to fit.  Looks like you might have to get down behind the amps and give it a try.

Of course if it doesn't you could always bastardize the wire by simply removing a few strands to reduce it down to 18 gauge.

Yeah I suppose I could cut away some of the wire.

I just checked my actual manuals and for all my amps, the 4B-SST, 6B-SST and 28-SST2s they all list only up to 18 AWG. Checking the 7B-SST2, 4B-SST2/3B-SST2, 6B-SST2 manuals on-line it states way up to 12AWG. The 9B-SST2, 28B-SST2 and 14B-SST2 manuals on-line list just up to 18 AWG.

Hi

You can use really thin gauge as you are only turning on a switch.

Thanks James but my concern is how thick is the actual limit as I have a bunch of 16 AWG speaker wire I got for free and if that works I'll definitely use it. Aside from potentially trigger wire this type of wire is only really as good as a garbage bag tie :)

No harm in using thick gauge
