MEMO: To All Bryston Customers
SUBJECT: Bryston Loudspeaker Designs

Floyd Toole on Speakers.

Hi folks,

Please see the link below. It is a talk by Floyd Toole regarding loudspeaker design – it is lengthy - about 1 hour and 13 minutes but has a wealth of information about how real speakers behave in real rooms.

I am dating myself here but I was involved back in the late 70’s and early 80’s when Floyd was working at the National Research Center in Ottawa and went thorough many of these listening tests myself.

The Bryston loudspeaker designs are heavily based on the design principles presented in this seminar.

Please pay special attention to these highlights:

1.   You do not hear the ‘on axis’ frequency response when listening to a speaker in a room – you are listening to the ‘SOUND POWER’

2.   Published specifications matter – see our brochure

3.   Comb Filtering misunderstandings.

4.   Importance of ‘Double Blind Testing’

5.   Equalization is just ‘WRONG’

6.   Importance of manufacturing consistency

7.   Closing the loop between the recording side and the reproduction side

8.   Importance of the testing and measuring facilities available

Hi James,

THANK YOU for the Toole lecture. I loved it. I even clapped with the audience at the end of the talk.

It makes me wish I could sit down with him for an hour or so. Every audiophile should listen to it although I suspect many of them would then waste tons of time rationalizing where Floyd is all off base.

Any idea what speaker he is talking about that is $1800 he shows the measurements of (at 1:02:50 in the presentation)? I'm assuming the $16,000 speaker he's referring to is the Revel ultima Studio 2's.

Are they not $20,000 with the amlplifiers?  The last information I read is that the speakers themselves are in the $2,200 range.

~ $24K retail / $20K street for the pair of M2 monitors with a pair of I-Tech 5000 HD amplifiers.

The amplifiers themselves sell for ~ $5K each street price, which puts the value of the monitors alone at $10K/pair, although I don't see anyone advertising the monitors by themselves without the amplifiers.
