Gird your loins Jethro Tull fans!

The backstory: my nephew is now deep into 70s rock and I am not. I switched from rock to jazz in the early 70s because, imo, stadium rock and rock theater had ruined too many bands, bands that having released truly great early albums suddenly became over saturated with success and all the excesses that come along with it and became a bit, well, flatulent. Sometimes very flatulent. Case in point is Jethro Tull whose first three albums are terrific, especially Stand Up, but after Benefit, things for Tull became a bit farty as Ian Anderson, Mr. Thunder Pants himself, the Minister of Methane, the Fresh Prince of Flatus, forgot the Blues and embraced courtly pretention, apparently too willing to add the trouser tuba to his arsenal of well mastered instruments and prance about on stage with a mighty wind in back of him. (It's not that I completely stopped listening rock. FM radio/the college station was then king and all my friends who were stoners really REALLY liked 70s music; so I did hear it, I just didn't buy it.)

In an attempt to bring me out of the darkness and show me the error of my ways my nephew recently gifted me the new 2 cd/2dvd Steve Wilson remastered Passion Play, beautifully packaged with an interesting 80 page booklet. Nephew didn't succeed. Verily. No knock against Mr. Wilson, it's beautifully re-recorded, but this still smelleth. Think cauliflower curry and warm PBR smelly. A veritable uncorked symphony of stinkiness. Which is all so strange because friends, as well as said nephew, include this as one of their favorite albums.

Wish I had a nephew like that. I'll take a thoughtful and caring kid off
your hands. I'd also love to have a little more passion in my life, tho

I had every Tull album in my collection up to Heavy Horses. I have to admit that Stand Up, Benefit and This Was were probably tops on the list. But I greatly enjoyed Thick as a Brick, Passion Play, Minstrel in the Gallery. I really did like them all to the point that I could sing along with every album without the lyrics to look at. I was truly a Tull nerd.

Stand up may be not only my favorite Tull album, but my favorite album; one I have listened to in it's entirety several times a year, every year since it came out.

HOWEVER, after seeing most every live rock act touring in the early to mid 70s, Tull"s Thick as a Brick concert was my favorite . Courtly pretension? The band made fun of themselves and their audience, while soaring musically well beyond any other live performance I've attended.
