Spikes

I have a set of big spikes that are part of the Super V kit, but I can't get them to thread more than about one full turn.

I used WD 40 and another nut buster product, can't remember the name, and I can't seem to tell if there is something gumming them up, or if they really are somehow damaged/rounded.  Should they be able to turn by finger strength?

Thanks,
Ben

Did you glue them in with something?  The actual mount in the wood?  My glue got in the way.  Not sure if this is where you are at.

It sounds like they MIGHT be the wrong thread??

I've had the same issue.  I'm actually now using threaded inserts and they seem to work  much beter

I haven't installed anything yet.  When I got my kit back when, I couldn't get them to thread in, but I figured I would just soak/spray them in something and that would make them smooth.  Didn't work.

I will try to get something else to thread them into I guess.

Thanks

Okay, that's weird. I use those same spikes all the time. They can be adjusted by hand. If not then something is wrong.

Every now and then there might be one that needs a little thread straightening, but not a whole set. Are you using the same spikes and inserts that came together?

Yes.  I have tried most of them.  But not every combination.  I will give them another try and maybe bring some spikes to look for other inserts.

Thanks,
Ben

And if any of them have messed up threads and they came that way from us then send them back and we will replace them.

Okay, thanks Danny.

Ben

I find a lot of threads on Chinese made products leave something to be desired. Having a metric tap & die set available to chase the threads solves most of them. Even a cheap set from Harbor Fright works good for chasing damaged threads. It might be quicker in the long run to fix the threads rather than sending the spikes back to Danny for replacement  Then you will have the tools for next time :thumb:

Larry makes a good point. I have yet to find a set of Chinese spikes that didn't have at least a couple that didn't work properly and that It only takes a few seconds to chase (clean up) threads and the inexpensive sets are fine for this. I would never try to cut new threads with them but for chasing they are fine.

How's that for a run on sentence?

diagram that sentence ;-)

+1 for Larry - I have a cheap combo metric and SAE tap and die set that I've used to "fix" several bad threads over the years

+2 for Larry. That is the fastest and easiest thing to do. But I will replace them if asked to.

I've purchased a set of spikes from Danny. Didn't have this problem, but I have had the same thing happen to me on a set of "expensive" spikes.
