B.B. King dies at 89.
« on: 15 May 2015, 07:59 am »
“Growing up on the plantation there in Mississippi, I would work Monday through Saturday noon,” he said. “I’d go to town on Saturday afternoons, sit on the street corner, and I’d sing and play.

“I’d have me a hat or box or something in front of me. People that would request a gospel song would always be very polite to me, and they’d say: ‘Son, you’re mighty good. Keep it up. You’re going to be great one day.’ But they never put anything in the hat.

“But people that would ask me to sing a blues song would always tip me and maybe give me a beer. They always would do something of that kind. Sometimes I’d make 50 or 60 dollars one Saturday afternoon. Now you know why I’m a blues singer.”

I was pretty bummed to hear of his passing.  He came to my town a few years ago but I didn't take time to go and instantly regretted it.  So few of those old masters remain.  He had a great run though and must be counted among the most influential musicians of modern times.

I'll have to play a couple of his albums tonight in remembrance of him.  :( He was a great blues guy and will be missed.

It would be difficult for anyone to describe the impact and significant contribution he had made to music, notably blues and all styles incorporating blues. His work stands very tall and he will remain a great musician and songwriter among all other greats. He will be missed by many people.

Remember him opening for the Stones in the early 1970s.  Great performer/musician who will be missed.

Overhead an elderly woman, who smelled of cattle, at a very rural venue in Vermont, "Never heard of him, but he sure can play the guitar". RIP

Saw him live headlining a triple bill with Johnny Winter and The Nighthawks right after SRV was killed (in fact, I learned about SRV at that show.)

There are many good, even great, good white blues players, but I doubt that very many of them picked cotton growing up, you know? BB was my introduction to that level of authenticity in the blues. 'Cook County Jail' made me a lifelong fan in minutes. RIP to a giant in the truest sense of the word.

May he never be forgotten.

How did he do it?

Quote
By early 1940 Mr. King’s mother was dead and his father was gone. He was 14 and on his own, “sharecropping an acre of cotton, living on a borrowed allowance of $2.50 a month,” wrote Dick Waterman, a blues scholar. “When the crop was harvested, Riley ended his first year of independence owing his landlord $7.54.”

Can anyone recommend any BB King CDs?
