The DAC chip and everything else will be surface mount soldered to one PCB, so nothing is upgradable in the traditional sense. But with the low price of this device, it will be thoroughly hacked and in about 2 years we'll see lots of opinions on how to make it "better" with DIY mods. ymmv

Thanks for the reply. I should have phrased the first question better. Can you hook up to both a nas wirelessly and external usb hard drive so one can play either or....thanks

Yes - if it's like the Aries (likely) they'd be treated as separate libraries.  So no mix & match playlist.  Remember that you'll also be able to insert an internal 2.5 hard drive, so that's another alternative vs NAS or external USB.

For XM you could always airplay to the Aries Mini from an iPhone / iPad / mac computer.

Aside from Schiit products, don't know of any other commercial streamer / dac that has upgradeable internals, particularly at that price.

To me there's very little risk to getting an Aries Mini, particularly if you value the year of Tidal service.  If you don't like it you could likely resell it at cost (less the Tidal service) to someone who wants one without the Tidal service.

As for SQ vs a Mac Mini - I think they are going to be broadly similar particularly because of the switching power supplies in each which is a bottle neck.  You'll of course be able to tweak the sound more with a Mac Mini - i.e. via different player software and the options that provide (i.e. Audiovarna / Pure Music / JRiver + eq'ing etc), but on the other hand the Aries has the virtue of simplicity, lower maintenance, and to some degree greater ease of use.  Those are all important factors if your primary concern is listening to music vs tinkering w/ a computer.

FYI i just upgraded to rs5 drivers in my super three narrows and tried them with my sherwood 5000 after 10 hours of break in.  Wow....has all the clarity of the omega sound with a much needed dose of juicy.....

While a tad noisy.....i attribute that to whoever modded my amp....Omega plus modded sherwood 5000 is a sublime combo.

Does anyone own this unit that could provide some updated impressions? The Audiostream review was favorable, but trust the ears of fellow AC'ers as well. I'm looking to move from a SB Touch w/upgraded PS and wonder if it's worth it. I plan on using the DAC in the mini so would there be much improvement in sound? With my research I'm confident I understand what features I gain/loose with the unit, but want to know about sound. Anyone go from Touch to this unit? Thanks

Currently have the mini in my system now. Lots to like and coming from the SB Touch I wouldn't say it was a huge jump, but there are differences. Anyone owners using a external DAC with this?

I use mine with a Hegel Super - which is a discontinued USB headphone DAC. I find the Hegel to be warmer and smoother. I also use mine with Auralics linear power supply, which was a big upgrade. If I had it to do again I'd probably get the Sbooster linear power supply though which is even better and only a bit more expensive.

I've read that upgrading the power supply makes a difference. The Audiostream review called this out as well. I was looking at the iFi one, but we will see. Thanks.

The Sbooster unit is the one most favored at just over $300. It's kinda big and heavy, but it's good. Not so easy to find a 15-16v "audiophile" LPS - most are 12V.

I use the Auralic mini as a streamer, but use the Antelope Gold as the external dac. I did spend the bucks to get an upgraded linear ps from Mojo Audio in case I want to use the mini's dac, but haven't tried that yet. Great sound and functionality. I've also become a big fan of Tidal, which was free with the purchase.

I have compared Astron power supplies to Audiophile ones and Astronaut sounds better. I just bought one for 75 bucks that is variable 12-15 volts.
