No need to throw anything out. You never know when you might need it. I built that 2A3 over 10 years ago. I didn't like it at the time, so I put it on a shelf. After I built the linestage a few months back, I hooked the 2A3 up and WOW. What I thought was a noisey amp was the pre I was using at the time. Now with the right pre, it is dead quiet with all the SET liquid midrange and magic. Also having the right speakers with a low power system helps with the synergy in this system.

DIY question - it looks like you tied the input grounds together at the RCA jacks but also bring the individual grounds back to the source selector.  Is that redundant, aesthetic,  or help with hum or thumps?

The input and output Jacks are isolated from chassis ground. So all of them are tied back to the main copper ground To a single point ground to chassis. The  input and output wires are shielded. Only the shields are tied to ground. The red and black input wires (left and right channels) go to the Elma switch.

Nicely done!  You might try out, for kicks, the 6N6P as a tube rolling excercise.  It should work as a drop in replacement even if it isn't exactly optimized for it.  The 6N6P has almost as much drive but a slightly softer sound, which I like, some don't.   No right/wrong answer, just an option.

That's a "NO BS" Linestage

It helps to have a buddy with a CNC in his garage. He machined the tube socket plates and the lettering in the chassis. I had a local shop do the black nickel plating. The rest is all me at my work bench.

On the recommendation from Louis, owner of Omega. He supplied the plans and input on stuffing, wiring and terminals.

Interesting. I have had a similar experience with a pair of 1625 mono blocks.  With some preamps, they seemed to have high background noise.  However, once I hooked up a DIY Thomas Meyer 6AH4 based preamp, the amps became DEAD quiet.  I think the transformer coupled output is what does the trick.

BTW:  Great work on your line stage.
