tuner dial issue, help! please
« on: 29 Sep 2004, 04:08 pm »
Hello all,

I just purchased a vintage tuner and all is well with the exception of the dial hits a very rough spot between fm 103 and 104, wanting to spring backward.  Once beyone that point and before that point, it works smoothly.  I assume this is the belt/rope with a knot in it that is hitting something.  Can this be easily adjusted or am I out of business on this one.  I purchased this item on ebay and have sent an email asking for return priviledges, but if it's an easy fix, I may keep the unit.    Thank you in advance for any and all opinions.

no clue here because we don't know which unit it is and specifics.  but if it were me I'd take the top off and just look around.  Maybe you'll see what it is and it'll be easy to rectify.

How could I omit the obvious?  It's a Marantz 112, butilt in 1975.  This is definately not a high end piece of equipment, but I wanted analog and for what I paid, it seems to give adequate sound through my AVA equipment.  Of course antenna choice means a lot too and if all goes well, I will upgrade the flimsy little ribbon type that I am now using for test purposes only.

Thanks Josh.  Will do when I get home this evening.  As I recall from years ago, these things are run by pulleys and some sort of string or cord.  I even remember the knots and I have a feeling that by simply adjusting that, it will remove the problem, but I will see this evening.  Thanks for your input.

Be careful, you don't want to have to restring it.

Well, I opened it up and it was a no brainer.  around the string at one point is a plastic sleeve, which I presume houses the knot.  Well, the edge of this little plastic sleeve was catching on some wires and to my pleasure, I found that the only reason this was happening was becuse of a loose screw in a clam that keeps those wires away from the string.  Easy fix this time.  Thank you for your input and advise.

I just love the Marantz look of that period. Horizontal tuning wheel was cool. Still remember my 2230 receiver because it was my first foray into hifi.
