Game of Thrones. Mmm... not impressed.

So I'm a grump when it comes to TV and movies. Some people say they have golden ears, well I admit to believing I have golden eyes. I love movies and I have strong opinions about them even though I don't watch them as much as I used to and I would never call myself a snob. Discerning, maybe, but not a snob. I get grumpy with pretentious stuff just as much as the commercial fodder and same goes for the stuff I do like.

So I know I'm bucking the national trend here when I say I finally watched the first season of Game of Thrones and I don't get the hype. I used to read fantasy novels so I'm a fan of the genre but not a hardcore fanboy. So it's not that aspect of the show although I barely consider GoT as 'fantasy'.

It's the characters. Man, these are a bunch of really unsympathetic, flat, unengaging people making bad judgement calls for the future of a kingdom or kingdoms that I know nothing about or really care to know anything about. I also hate their names but that's an admittedly petty call. I do like Dinklage but feel like he's hamming it up because he doesn't get what he's doing either. Charles Dance (aka Sardo Numspa) is a personal fave and I think HE nails the show and his character but everyone else? Couldn't care less.

The Dothraki stuff makes my eyes roll with the fake language and subtitles and Cecil B. DeMille-era costumes and acting. The Skinemax sex would have had me trying to find the HBO between channels 2 and 4 when I was 12 to catch some T&A but now seems a little forced. Sean Bean/Ned was a great part but then, well... you know. And I get the feeling that's going to happen alot. Former Mayor Carcetti is a potentially compelling character as brothel lord but I'm guessing his days are numbered.

But I still watch it. Why? Because the production value is top notch and I feel like it's a gateway show for more, better fantasy series in the future. Otherwise I am totally jaded about it.

Why do you guys and gals watch it? What is about the show you find compelling?

Well, it doesn't help that that dude is one of the worst actors I've ever seen.  I mean Keanu Reeves level bad.  Jesus Christ it's painful to watch him try to look serious and deep with his wooden face and monotone voice. I take that back, he's not even Keanu Reeves' level, he's Ben Affleck level.  No, check that, he's the unholy offspring of both of them.

Everyone else on the show gets better (acting wise) in the subsequent seasons.  But not freaking Jon Snow, he remains a black hole blight on the entire production.

I got the entire first season as a Christmas gift, I never had HBO so never watched it to begin with. My wife and I have yet to have the urge to open the box it came in.
From what I read here it doesn't look like we've missed any must see TV either.

I think it's worth watching. It is a gorgeous show. I just don't get why it's a blockbuster phenomenon. My guess is it hits a sweet spot of being something for people who don't get lord of the rings but love Scandal who get to have a taste of the genre without feeling like geeks, meanwhile you have the diehard fans of the books and the genre, and finally the pedigree of HBO.

The high points (of the series) are pretty good, but it's a lot like the Walking Dead- long stretches where nothing really happens.  I'd say it's not fatally boring like Walking Dead but it has some of the same flaws.  I think some of the characters are bad, some are excellent.  Season One is a bit weak but it gets better.  I like Sean Bean a lot but the show gets better without him.  Dinklage is a treasure!  If they kill him off I'll probably quit watching.  The youngest Stark girl becomes pretty interesting over time.  Jaime Lannister is set up as a straight up villain in the beginning but has become one of the best, most compelling characters.  Even Jon Snow gets interesting.

It's not a work of genius but I'm a big fantasy fan.  Played AD&D for three decades, just love the genre.  It's one of the only shows of its kind so I'll probably keep watching.  It's only 12 hours a year after all!

I thought the most recent season was definitely downhill, so wait until you get to that one wushu!

I dunno, it's television. It's entertainment. Some of it is completely stupid. Martin is not Tolkien. But, it can be pretty absorbing at times too.
