Octal cornet + MC step up transformers ?
« on: 29 Sep 2004, 01:58 am »
Guys,
I got standard Cornet with improved up power supply. I absolutely love it.

About Octal Cornet:
Octal tubes should be much, much better sounding devices them 9pin 12AX7's.
But octal phono does not have enough gain. But, if we add step up transformer, then gain should be very adequate for most cartridges. I see LL9206 Lundahl phono transformers are available for about $110 pair from K&K audio.

I have no experience with Lundahl's so any comments will be very appreciated. I'd like to hear if people have any experience with other MC step ups that are reasonably priced.

Thanks
Sergey

Sergey:
I'm using the LL9206's at 10:1 with an original Cornet. I've used them in a direct comparison with S&B's. There is a difference, but the price is right. I'm very happy with them.

I have a pair of Jensen MC step up transformers in my Cornet and have been very happy with them. I have a pair of Lundahl transformers as well and I prefer the Jensens but not by large margain. The Jensens are about twice the price of the Lundahl putting them about 1/2 way between the Lundahl and the S&B. I don't know if the Jensens are worth twice the price but I do not regret my choice.

I have used the Lundahl, Jensen and S&B transformers with various Cornets.

The S&B is far and away the best sounding of this trio. Both Jim Hagerman and John Chapman offer the S&B in a separate case and both sound very good. If you plan on building the S&Bs into your Cornet, you will need a VERY large chassis to fit them in.

The Jensens and the Lundahls are fairly close in sound. The Jensens have a shielded case and fit inside a chassis very easily. The Lundahls I have are in a separte enclosure offered by K&K Audio. They do tend to pick up hum a bit more than either the Jensen or the S&B in my useage.

I also have the Lundahl's in a seperate enclosure.  As per Jims's post I run twisted pair from the turntable to the transformers and Coax from the transformers to the Cornet.  I agree with Wayne that you need to be careful in order not to pick up hum.  Mine sit right to the side of the Cornet and are very quiet.
