Fair value for a Marantz 6300 turntable
« on: 24 Mar 2015, 04:06 pm »
A friend of mine passed away past year and I'm helping his widow get rid of his toys, mostly cameras and trains.

She has a nice Marantz 3300 6300 TT with dustcover, two headshells and two carts, one an OEM Shure and the other a Grado MM.

I see crazy prices on flea bay, and another friend of mine is looking for a table in the $100-200 range.  I was hoping the Marantz would be perfect but it may be too high.

Thoughts?

Thanks for any ideas.

It's a direct drive table with a nice looking arm, tho I doubt it has VTA adjustment. I'd put it at $125-$150 if it isn't beat up.

------Edited------ The image I found upon close-up inspection was a 3300, but it was a Sony, not a Marantz. There is no Marantz 3300 listed in the vinyl engine. For now, model is unknown.

I'm pretty sure it has arm height adjustment, don't remember exactly.  The table is worth what someone is willing to pay.  The one sold on Epay for $910 was probably a fluke - a bidding war.  I think the value is based on its cool looks more than performance, but it's a half decent table.  It's servo controlled (not quartz locked).   Here's one on US Audiomart:

$725.??  I wouldn't even consider it at that price, but I bet you could easily get $550 for the widow.  IMO it's not worth that either, but the price of used tables is way up.  If you clean it up and polish the cover it should fetch even more.

The ebay range is $300-$900 for those that actually sold.  :o  From what I read, it's just another 70's turntable.

I know, but I can not find that a Marantz 3300 TT was ever made. That is why I asked if anyone had a picture of a Marantz 3300 TT.

I think he has the model number wrong. It probably is a 6300.

The Marantz data base does not have a 3300 turntable listed either.......

One of my preamps is a Marantz 3300.

That's what me thinks too!

LOL, the 6 on my keyboard is just above the 3. If the TT is a 6300 it is worth a hell of a lot more than $125-$200 bucks, even if in bad shape.

Wayner I think your in the right ballpark with the price "but" people go nuts on places like eBay.
I bought a VPI HW 19MkIII w/ a Rega arm and a Denon cart a few years back for $590

Oops, brain fart.   :duh:

I searched all over the place and can't find a 3300.   Here's a 2200:

I hear ya, but we gots to get the model number right first.

If it is a 6300 (in good shape) that would be a great addition table for someone's collection (heh, heh) or a great starter table for a newb. Those tables seemed to stand up pretty good, time wise anyway. They either worked or they didn't. Probably Marantz's best or at least best/price to performance tables.....

We shall (hopefully), soon see...

Brain fart.  Yeah, it's a 6300.  Even while typing it I was thinking "How cool!  Marantz had a nice preamp with the same model number!"  What a dope!   :duh:

OK, now we are getting somewhere!!! I think the price should hover around $500-600 depending on the finish (scratches/scuffs) and if it has a dust cover. A really minty one (looking like it came out of the box) might command a bit more, but I think the $700-750 range is just too high. It could go higher if its mint and you have the original shipping box. The shipping box will get you big dollars because the buyer will be more confident that the table will be packed correctly and get to him in one piece.

Good Luck.

Thanks, Wayner!  He had the boxes for everything else he owned, and it does have a DC, but she said it was a garage sale find, so who knows?

If interested in the TT let her know what the asking prices are on Ebay. I would also make it clear to her the hassle of selling on Ebay. Bigger hassle would be, imo, shipping a TT across country. What if it gets damaged in shipment?

With all that said she may not want to go through the hassle, and sell the TT to you or your friend for a hundred or two hundred bucks. If it is clean, not all beat up it is well worth that.

Problems with the Marantz 6300 TT?  Speed control.... The pitch control pots get dirty and they can be a bare to clean properly. But they can be cleaned and a stable speed control restored. Just Google Marantz 6300 turntable problems.
Here is just one example of a search.

You might want to check the 6300 first before you buy. All you have to do is try setting the strobe for both 45 and 33 rpm. If it does not hold steady the problem is more than likely just dirty pitch control pots. Like I said they can be a burger to clean, but they can be successfully cleaned. Once properly cleaned, the speed can be set dead on with the strobe.
