TeamViewer on a Touch-Screen ?
« on: 18 Mar 2015, 02:56 pm »
Is anyone using TeamViewer on a touch-screen laptop? TeamViewer is a remote control program to control one computer from another one.  I use it to control my music server which has a Windows 8 OS. It works great from my W7 desktop and XP laptop.  They are not touch-screen. My server is in my equipment rack and I control it from my desk while I am working or via iPad or laptop when I am in the same room.

It does not work so well with my iPad. In fact, I have given up using it for TeamViewer.  The app is disappointing. I can’t just touch the screen.  I have to move the cursor into position first. It has caused me some problems by deleting things.  When I have the iPad in hand my default habit is to just poke.  I am not used to dragging a cursor in place first.
I am considering purchasing a new laptop and can’t decide whether to go with W7-Pro while they are still available or wait for W8 and get a touch screen.

I assume a laptop would be operating the full TeamViewer program and not the mobile app so I would be avoiding the cursor drag nuisance. Can I just touch and go?  Any information on how the program performs on a touch-screen would be appreciated.

Thank you.

You are correct.  Using TeamViewer on a Windows 8 touch laptop will let you touch and execute without having to position the cursor first.

When I want to control my computer with my iPod, I run TightVNC Service on the computer and Mocha VNC Lite iOS app on the iPod.  It also uses less resources and doesn't require Internet access to the Team Viewer website.

Note:  You do have to open a port on the PC (default is 5900) to use VNC as it doesn't use HTTP Port 80 like Team Viewer.

Thank you Steve.  That is good news.  As much as I like W7 I hate to buy equipment that will become dated before I am done flogging it.  I will wait for W10 and get a touch-screen.  Maybe I will get a break-apart tablet/laptop.  Whatever moves me at the time.

I have a question about the software you recommended.  Do you mean I won't need internet access at all after they are installed?  Everything goes through my router only between iPad and music server? FYI, music server is on a LAN.

Teamviewer will do both "Touch Enabled" and "mouse gestures"
you can switch from one to the other by bringing up the control panel (on the bottom of the screen).

By the end of the year (MS says end of summer) WIN10 should be out.
MS also said it would be a free upgrade for Win 8 and Win 7 users.

Yes, TeamViewer requires an Internet connection to their server to establish connection to another computer (even on the same LAN), but keyboard, mouse and many other functions will continue to work if the Internet connection is subsequently removed or lost.

VNC requires no initial Internet connection at all if both computers are on the LAN.

JRace and Steve.  Thanks for the help.  Useful info.

For now I will stick with TeamViewer.  I need to keep it working because I get remote tech support for upgrading and trouble shooting. If I get ambitious (or brave) I could add the no-internet options.  I have a way of mucking things up.  I gave up on LogMeIn.

Is this for computers or the iPad app?   I can't check it out now because I removed TV from my iPad after it messed up my music server. And I do not currently have a touch-screen computer.

It is on the iPad app.

When you use an ipad you can shoose to either have direct touch (so wherever you press on the iPad your curser will jump to that location and press the left mouse button) or mouse gestures, which means that there will be a curser on the screen that moves around based on how you move your finger, so if you had your finger on the screen, and slide it up the curser will go up, just not locked to where your finger is...

hope that makes sense.

Strange that TV messed up your server. I run it on 4 computers in my house, and 10 computers outside my house without any issues.

Actually, TV had help messing up.     And I was not quite clear. I forgot to move the cursor and kept tapping.  :slap: Work dammit.  Somehow I deleted some things that should not have been deleted and the GUI had to be repaired.  No real damage. Just pilot error but since I had to have remote help fixing it I was bummed for a couple of days until the internet cavalry had time.

I had to go back to spinning CDs.  Oh the horror.  :o
