What is this connector?
« on: 9 Feb 2015, 09:09 pm »
I need to resource a small quantity of these and the $6 ea. the LED manufacturer is asking seems like a raw deal. I'm betting these are a standard connector like AMP or Molex but don't know to identify.

Anybody here recognize 'em? And if so where could I purchase a couple dozen with loose pins. I have a crimper that looks like it does these, so I think I'm good there.

Thanks!

Not really sure but they look like Molex makes them.

Yes, a 2 wire molex. Best thing to do is look in the Digikey Catalog until you see the sucker.

If they are around you, Frys might carry them.

Radio Shack might too.

I spent some time (here at work, cause I'm bored) on the Molex site, but couldn't find the connectors.
Although, the menu section of "Connectors" is massive, I'm sure I didn't see it all.
http://www.molex.com/molex/index.jsp

The connectors remind me of the battery connectors on a Traxxas R/C truck, back in the day (20 years ago).
If that's the case, a hobby shop that sells Traxxas would have them. I used to have a bunch of these.

Hope that helps,
Bob

If my memory hasn't completely gone, I also seem to remember that AMP copied a bunch of Molex stuff and this one might be made by them.......and maybe by now, AMP has been bought out?????

Too lazy to go looking for you. Have Bob go look.................Bob, go look for these in the AMP catalog!!!!

I think I may have found them, does this look right?

And these pins

You're right, there's a lot to sift through.

If amp makes a copy, would they interchange or would it need to be all AMP or all Molex?

Hey Peter, since you need a couple dozen, are you want to match these exactly, or are you open to other options that look similar?

Bob, the female receptacles already exist, so I really want to find an exact match. These are connectors for LED lighting for under cabinet, etc. Right now I'm making a "show me" display. It's a modular system and many of the components come with pins already crimped on and housing loose with a fixed length of wire that's going to be too long most of the time. I want to re terminate so there's not a gob of wire bundled up at one end...am I making sense?

Looks like they're called "JST" connectors.
Digi-Key and Mouser sell them, but I haven't found the exact part number you need.

OK, I've got to go, so you're on your own.
Go to Amazon and do a search for "2 pin JST connector".
There's a bunch of options, but I've run out of time.

Best of luck, hope that helps!
Bob

Those look like pretty standard two pin molex to me, but I am not an expert in connectors.   I have a ton of higher pin count connectors like that sourced from a surplus outlet for pennies.   They are good for making sub-boards and external power, etc.

Bob, your intuitions were right about the RC cars. The devil's in the details. I was having no luck finding that stepped pin in Molex or Amp until I went searching in Google images and whaddyaknow:

Maybe I'd have found it eventually, but that little nugget of info was worth price paid.

Nice.  8)
I was using those connectors in the mid 80's on R/C cars. That's where I learned how to solder, by the way.
That's also where I learned what a DC motor does when you wire it backwards, but that's a different story.
Glad you found what you needed man. Glad I could help. I do find it humorous that the LED lighting industry is using R/C connectors from a quarter century ago.
How much do they cost? I went through the "add to cart" process, but never did give me the price.
I'm sure they're cheaper than $7 a piece.
