Hi All. I have a pair the original Phillips mylar tweeters and a pair of Dayton pre - built 3.5khz crossovers. What do you think of this woofer for desktop OBs.

Poor electrical damping makes no detail. It will be very, very warm sounding and the bass will have NO detail at all. Sinewave City.

Make the box big enough so Qtc is no larger than .71. Use a free box simulator like WinISD, or ask here for help.

If you go smaller box, you will boost the resonant frequency which will sound like one note bass, which will sound boomy in addition to warm.

The poly cone combined with poor electrical damping makes for a boring sounding midrange. It will sound like background music, which is easy to ignore, so you will not be distracting yourself while you work at the computer. :)

Small voice coil and med. Le should allow it to cross at 3500, but it will be beaming a little there, so it will be a little more sensitive to the toe angle. No problem for desk speakers.

Equivalent Bandwidth Product (EBP) is 37, so it requires a sealed box, not ported, which means the bass will roll off quickly in a small box suitable for desktop speakers. The high Q alignment from the small box, combined with poor electrical damping might give you pretty obnoxious one-note-bass at the system resonance, guessing around 100Hz? To avoid this, try to make the boxes with internal volume so that Qtc = .71 maximum. Use free WinISD to simulate the driver in box to figure out the volume you need, or ask here for help.

I think it is priced fairly on closeout.  For a desktop speaker connected to a computer you can easily boost the bass with computer EQ using foobar JRiver, etc.

So what the hell, Give it a try.

Thanks Richidoo.  I ordered them today because it is a cheap experiment.  I'll try them in an OB first and do some measurements.  If nother else, they will work with our TV.  It is only 48" and has horrable sound.  The guy at BB said that the manufactures "expect" customers to buy HT surround systems as well so they don't use good speakers.

If they don't sound good in OB I'll use a cinder block with wood plates back and front.
