reformatting hi-res from stereo to mono?
« on: 13 Jan 2015, 12:26 am »
I would like to use some of my hi-res tunes for evaluations and need to reformat them in mono. Easy to do when I rip discs but I don't know how to do that from an existing flac file?
can anybody help?

thanks,
lou

What ripping and playback software are you using currently?

You can use JRiver for file conversion.

Select the FLAC files you want to convert in JRiver.

On the JRiver Menu select Tools > Library Tools > Convert Format.  The Convert Format window will open at the bottom of the left sidebar.

Select FLAC Encoder (unless you prefer an AIFF or WAV with no metadata tags)

Click the Encoder Settings button
Select 0 compression level (largest file/fastest decoding)

Click the Options Link
  Choose Destination file folder
Select Mode (Leave original file and choose whether or not to add back to library)
Under Audio Options check Apply DSP
  Click DSP Settings
Select Output Format checkbox on left side
Change Channels dropdown to 1 channel (mono)
Close DSP Studio and click OK on Audio Conversion Options dialog

Click the Convert button in the Convert Format window in left sidebar

I would edit the filename or song name tag of the converted files with the suffix "(Mono)"

FWIW, XLD seems to be the ripping tool of choice on the Mac. Hear there is a JRiver for Mac now but haven't tried it.

I just did the same thing to test some headphones. I used Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/) and it worked great. Gave me the ability to play mono, swap channels, play a single channel, play a single channel mono, etc. If you go this route let me know and I can step you through how to make the selections (it was a bit hidden/confusing at first glance).

I was going to mention the free open source Audacity software which I also use, but I thought since Lou already has the JRiver software it would allow him to perform the conversion on a selection of files, rather than opening each one separately in Audacity and exporting.

Either one will work well.
