the cost is N metres x 14 x 50cents ...

Don't forget to add your time....
[(Materials Cost) + My Rate x 12 hours] =  :o

I'm going to try some Tara TFA Phase 2 cable... it was the hot ticket in the 80's but I never bought it... Some people are reporting good luck with it used with the AKSA....  Maybe it was made in Australia? ;)

I'll compare to my expensive Audience cable and see what happens.  So far, nothing has bested it that's cheaper.

Better yet, why not cast white magic spells? You pay me, I come over and enchant your system into being the world's best, for a meagre sum of $1,000, plus expenses of say $2,000.

It sounds tempting...are you made in America?  If not, forget it you dirty foreigner!  I only accept wizards from the USA. Yee haw! :P

Nah, if it's DIY and you're making it for yourself you can't calculate your time.  It may sound silly when applied to the subject of cables, but it is a labor of love and 'labor cost' doesn't enter into it IMO.

the time you spend is part of the hobbie of DIY and its the reason its so satisfying to do :)

your not an audiophile if you havnt made something yourself your just a consumer whore with taste :)

I'd prefer ....consumer "Harlot". :jester:
Not everyone has the time , tools, or knowledge to tackle a DIY project...IMO. :) [/list:u]

Another DIY cost to consider is marketing.  You will need to photograph your CAT5 cable, design an advertisement for it, sell space in an independent audio magazine featuring reviews of your own gear, read your own ad, get super duper excited about the HUGE performance increase you will get, and then buy your own DIY cable from a dealer network consisting of yourself at a hideous markup.

One thing I am very curious about with this DIY Cat 5 cables is that although it is very low inductance it is relatively high in capacitance.  One has to be aware that not all amps are going to like this.  But what I am more concerned about is won't this capacitance roll off high frequency?  Is that why so many audiophiles like it, cause it rolls off the highs like tube amps of yorn?

You know Josh, you could be very much right.

Some years ago, after a VERY heated argument, just short of axes and knives flying around (very common among local audiophiles), a friend and I produced three amplifiers. Nominally they were the same, but one one difference:

1. No1 was decompensated, i.e. allowed to run as free as it could;
2. No2 was normally compensated, i.e. -3 dB at 1 Hz and 300 kHz, and
2. No3 was intentionally cutailed, with gentle roll-offs in the bass (-3 dB at 40 Hz) and treble (-1.5 dB at 20 kHz).

Well, nobody really liked No.1, so it was dumped. The SS crowed loved No.2, but the tubie guys said it was "too explicit, like cheap whore", whatever that means.

But No.3 was loved by the tube crowd, they said it was almost like real toobes (did they mean "boobs"?), but the SS guys said it was limited in bandwidth and lacked both real kick and sparkle.

Kind of corresponds with you question, doesn't it?

Cheers,
DVV

yes they have high capacitance.

interesting... The highs i am getting from this cat5 stuff is absolutly crystal.  its certainly not rolling off before 22khz... thats as high as i can hear... however my raven r1 tweeters can hit as high as 40khz i believe so ill have to ask them how they are feeling with cat5.

but seriously they sound almost as good as the raven r1 tweeters do at war audio... pat is using differenct cable i dont know what.  But his should sound better he has an 18k cd player.

i cant comment on below 40hz though because thats where my subwoofer comes into it and its being run off very solid OFC.

Cable or load capacitance will more likely cause the device driving it to become unstable and possibly oscillate rather than roll-off the high freqs.

The sound may seem brighter due to im distortion etc.

then again unless i a + b ed the cable i probably wouldnt notice -1 db at 22 khz....

however the cable was a shit load clearer than anything i had heard before if its important to ya :)

and yes its important your amp does not have a problem with the high capcitance of the load.  mine didnt! :)
