How do I cut Norez on a table saw?
« on: 11 Jan 2015, 06:47 pm »
Remember - there are no stupid questions.  That said, asphalt up or down?  Any tips on getting smooth edge on foam.  My electric carving knife could do nothing to this foam.

Slow and steady. I put asphalt up and foam down.  Blade should be 1/4 higher than sheet.  Marke the paper side with permanent black market for your cut lines.

I guess you can do it either way then seeing as I usually cut it asphalt down. It does make a heck of a mess this way, even with the dust collector on. Next time I'll try it asphalt up and see how that works.

I'll have to try it hard dampening layer up as well  as I usually   have it down.  I usually end up pretty coverd in foam  dust. my neice usaualy has a good laugh at me

When  yo u  cut back the foam onthe wone   end   for clearance around the  woofers,  just use a  sharp  utility knife  and a good  straight edge ( Iused a  plastic  paint stir stick  when I did my H-Frames that was  just  a bit over  1.125").   Just slice down to the dampening layer and  the foam comes off nicely leaving a nice edge

I like to use a bandsaw to cut NoRez. Seems like a lot less waste when making multi cuts out of one piece.

That size/type (thickness/TPI) of blade do you use on the bandsaw for NoRez?

I've used my band-saw for cutting No-rez with great results and very little mess.
I just used the blade that's on it 90% of the time... a Wood Slicer from Highland Woodworker... a 1/2" wide blade with 3-4 tpi variable tooth pitch ...  http://www.highlandwoodworking.com/wood-slicer-resaw-bandsaw-blades.aspx?utm_source=iContact&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Product%20Video%20Email%20Blasts&utm_content=Leigh+router+table+dovetail+jig+video
It's a blade that anybody with a band-saw should consider...highly recommended for re-sawing.

My low-tech approach has served me quite well. I used a box cutter with asphalt facing up. Push hard and keep fingers clear.

Michael, do you mention the  "Keep fingers clear"  part due to  experience  ?
I learned that lesson when I was  building  my first pair of GR speakers and doing the  homemade no rez.  Was cutting the vinyl flooring and    the  cutter slipped across the straight edge ,   cut abouo 1/3 of the way through  my thumb,  thankfully had my trusty bottle of  "zap" (crazy glue) on hand

Like Michael says, keep those fingers clear  !

OUCH!

Jay,

No nasty surprises while cutting Norez, but I've cut myself while slicing onions enough times to be scared witless.  :duh:

Asphalt down on table saw. Keep 2/3 fingers on opposite sides of the fence of no-rez. That way your fingers don't slip on the slick paper, and even if they made contact, they won't shoot in since other fingers are holding hand towards fence.

Bandsaw is great for circles etc. But you need a guide for straight cuts. Following a line doesn't really work. The blade doesn't really matter as far as I can tell. Neither tools gave problems for me with the debris.

Scissors suck. Utility knife sounds like hell.

I am using this $18 oscillating tool to cut through the asphalt (facing up) and most of the foam. A final slice with a sharp knife through the remainder of the foam gets the job done.

Easy and safer/less messy than using a table saw.

How?? Where you pushing no-res backwards into the tablesaw? Those oscillators vibrate so hard it's rather difficult to be straight, without plunge attachment.

No-rez on floor, asphalt side up, piece of plywood underneath. I get very straight lines without using a guide by digging the oscillating blade through the asphalt layer at the farthest end and then pulling the tool towards me along the marked line.

FWIW - After reading all advice, I tried my trust handheld jigsaw, a nice powerful one, and it was a piece of cake.  Marked lines on asphalt, lay on table foam down with edge to be cut just off table edge.  If it was bending  I held it up all level so foam cut would be even. Absolutely no mess and takes 10 minutes.  Experimented with board on top to compress foam while cutting - perhaps neater, but a PIA so I didn't do it that way.

Now, do I REALLY need to solder those connections?

By slipping on some shrink tube and soldering  you will seal up  that wire  and keep it from oxidizing.  I didn't find those quick connects overly secure when  testing anyway.
Remember  to cut back the foam on the no rez  1 - 1.5" on all inner edges (baffle side)    to  leave some clearence   for the woofers.
