I watched this last night.

It could easily have been taken in a bad direction, but Clint took this one good places.

Slow paced build, realistic exploration of some very challenging moral areas, and as far as I know stayed true to the real story.  I have not read the book, and frankly was not aware of this story prior to seeing it.

It was a tough movie though, it really showcased the horrors of war, and had me reflecting on how lucky I am that I have never had to face any of that.  And how thankful I am for those that have.

Chris Kyle was asked during an interview if he ever had any regrets? The question pointed to the 162+ combatant kills for which he was officially credited. I think the question should have been..." Can you estimate how many American Marines and coalition forces you saved?"
I agree, he is an American hero. No doubt about it. He had a very tough job, and he did it.
BTW Chris answered " I wished I could have saved more Marine's lives"

I'm looking forward to seeing it.  I am not a pro-war guy by any means, but the only negative comments I've ever read about the guy were from some who questioned his "cool" or "I enjoyed it" comments, out of context, when asked about his feelings of his accomplishments.  What he said, in the context, was more like that he felt he was a good enough sniper that each of his kills were truly "bad guys", trying actively to harm or kill Americans/allies, and that if he had taken any other approach or emotion to risking his life and the lives of his fellow soldiers he would have gone insane, or be killed.

Just got back to seeing it and I'm amazed.  Very good movie!  With a film like this it's tough to walk the line between hagiography and jingoism on the one hand or anti-war propaganda on the other. I think the film succeeds in showing that war is horrible but honoring the warriors, without trying to put a halo on them that doesn't fit.  Bradley Cooper's performance was surprising- no, shocking is a better word.   The physical transformation he underwent was incredible, even by Hollywood standards. And he channeled Kyle more than portraying him IMO.  His quiet intensity was simply amazing.  Sienna Miller was fantastic, too.  I think this was the best performance of her career.

Certainly the movie is intense and violent, so be forewarned.  But American Sniper is one of the finest war films I've ever seen.

Saw it last night...Clint knocked it out of the park again. And great job by Bradley Cooper...this guy has really turned into a fantastic actor.

It had a strange documentary vibe to it, with almost no editing for crafting mood and what not compared to other movies. It really made you feel strongly for the emotions the guys felt that are tapped into less with movies; more like you being one of them instead of sympathetic. It was more interesting as a surprisingly real to life than a good movie. As far as a "story" it's almost plotless, but that wasn't the aim (har har).

I read up a bit on him. He may or may not have told the truth on some items in his book. They may have been fantasies reflecting how he felt. They were all stateside. I can't see how any of it's important, he really did want to save soldiers. I might read the book I wonder if his attitude changed towards the innocent over there - that's extremely common, that soldiers lose empathy to anyone but fellow soldiers.

My father was also a WWII vet, 3 invasions and 7 campaigns with the 1st ID. He didn't think much of them either. "We never took them prisoner", he always used to say.
