Connecting twin rel subwoofers to Bryston 7B
« on: 2 Jan 2015, 04:04 am »
Hello I didn't want to bug my dealer this late so I though I'd try here and see if I can get a quick reply.
I was about to connect the high level speakon connection on the rel to the Bryston when I realized I now have 7B mono blocs.

I've found one piece of information that says to pair the red and yellow cables and connect them to the + terminal and the black to the negative terminal.

But reading other forums has me confused so I wanted to make sure I don't blow my new 7Bs or the Rels.

If anyone knows how to do this correctly with this specific configuration please let me know.

Thanks

Hi

Yes please check with Mike Pickett at Bryston as I believe the Rels can not be used with certain types of grounding.

Since you'll be using the Rels in mono (I use two Storm IIIs this way and previously used them with a 6BSST and a 14BSST in that manner) you just connect the positives (yellow and red) to the positive terminal on the amp and the negative (black) to the negative terminal of the amp.  The diagram for the Speakon connector shows that the two negative terminals inside the 4-pole (2 positive and 2 negative) are connected via a jumper wire.  The connection to the amp is just to steal a little signal and more or less take the sonic signature to the Rel.

I also make my own Rel custom cables with the Speakon connector.

This is the inside of the Speakon connector (you can see one of the connection if you enlarge the appropriate photo) - http://www.parts-express.com/neutrik-nl4fc-speakon-connector-4-pole-cable-mount--092-050

I have 4 Rels (formerly used them all in the main system with the two Storm IIIs for stereo, Q150 for the center and Strata III for the rears - my solution to multi-channel bass management for music).  Don't have the space in the new place so I have the Q150 in one spare system and the Strata III in another (hooked to a Bryston 3BST).

If using a single Rel sub (vs. a pair) with monoblocks then you would just follow the instructions in the manual - page 13 here - http://www.sumikoaudio.net/ContentsFiles%5CST-Series-Manual%281%29.pdf

The instructions (hopefully the link works) have a diagram with this indicated:

"High Level connections should be made to the same binding posts as the main
speakers
Connect as shown above. Connect RED to right monoblock speaker positive (red) terminal,
connect YELLOW to left monoblock speaker positive (red) terminal. The BLACK should be
connected to ground at the pre amplifier. If the pre amplifier does not have a dedicated
ground terminal, then use one of the chassis screws at the rear of the pre amplifier.
NOTE:- MAKE SURE THAT ANY CHASSIS SCREW WHICH IS USED IS NOT CAPTURED
ON THE INSIDE WITH A NUT, THE NUT COULD DROP INSIDE THE UNIT."

Thanks for the replies.
I'd decided to bug my dealer after all a little while after I posted my question and sent him a text message.
Bad impatient me. He was navigating poor roads from Red Deer back to Edmonton.

Anyway, he will check with his Bryston rep and get back to me.

My 7Bs are not next to each other. They are next to each Maggie 3.7i which I also got over Christmas.
And they are far away from the ARC LS27 preamp which is on another corner of the room behind the listening position.

Santa was good to someone.  The jacket should be able to split or you could make your own (the little terminals inside the Speakon connected are labeled as '1+,' '1-,' '2+' and '2-').  Another option is to just get a second cable.  When I had my 6BSST in my old house, I was using it for the center and rears.  I was using a Rel Q150 for the center and a Strata III for the rears.  The 6BSST was behind a couch a bit under 20 feet (going to the room corner and then to the amp) from the center channel and about 8 feet to the wall jacks for the rear channels.  So I had cables back and forth and made them for ease of use (along with a trigger to the 6BSST).  Below are pics of the old house where you can see the Rel Q150, the couch (the one with the leopard throw) where the 6BSST sat behind and the back of the 6BSST (as well as the Rel Strata III in the last photo).

Sorry, I should have replied back earlier.
My dealer heard back from his rep last week and we connected the red and yellow together to the + speaker terminal and the black to the 7Bs chassis on each amp (one for each of the two subs).
