A few other things I sometimes post about older records, before digital recordings in the later 80's...

1. The original albums were cut from the original master tapes with involvement of original producer and the group itself. Reissues may not be from the original tapes, may not correspond to what the group wanted. There are exceptions, like The Band's Big Pink apparently having no bass below 80 Hz or XTC's Skylarking having the bass out of phase on the original releases!

2. Many of the British pressings are superior to American pressings.

3. Become familiar with the dead wax markings of some key mastering engineers: Peckam (Porkie's Prime Cuts), RL for Robert Ludwig, etc. Check this thread: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=314200

4. Keep posting and asking here! Lots of info from forum members.

Often it requires buying several copies of an album to figure out what you like best. For example, the mono Surrealistic Pillow beats all the stereo ones. And, the Classic Who's Next is the best (to me).

I often type into Google: stevehoffman.tv and then add a particular record. You can also post a thread there, they are pretty friendly, but if you have a question, they likely have already answered it! Lots of opinions but it will give you ideas.

The albums by the group Low are AAA and sound great. I saw them with roscoeiii a couple of years ago!

I try to stay away unless I have unlimited time! Hanging out there, though, sure does make me feel "normal."

If you want the "best" Led Zeppelin go for the classic records pressings.  They are expensive, but they sound better than the new remasters.

I agree with this. I have the Classic Records of I, II and IV. With the exception of an RL LZ II, I think the Classic Records pressings are better than the originals

I am still surprised there isn't an online source or giant list for all classic records like Zeppelin, Doors, Beatles etc...

which lists which is best LP pressing for a particular record, at least for big name albums.  just saying.

guess I need to do homework for each album I lust for
