Apple Lighting Connector to Digital Output for DAC
« on: 28 Dec 2014, 07:16 pm »
This seems like it would be easy, but after looking at cables of various configurations, I'm more confused than when I began.

Occasionally, I'd like to stream from my iPhone 5s  or iPad 4 to audio rig, both use Lightning connector. Best seemed like it would be digital signal from phone into Wyred 4 Sound Dac 2. On the DAC, I have available digital inputs for COAX, AES/EBU, optical and i2s. I really don't know much about i2s, but it appears to use an HDMI connector.

It looks like I could use Lightning to AV adaptor, which converts to HDMI and then HDMI into DAC. Does that sound reasonable? One cable solutions, assuming there are any, elude me.

Others must be doing similar successfully. Are there more/simpler/better possibilities?

No USB input on the dac? I use a lightning to USB cable with no issues. The lightning to AV cable should work as well for the HDMI input.

Crimson, there is a USB input, but occupied by music server, so I'd rather avoid it. After thinking about it, the AV cable may prove to have other uses, so that's a plus.

Most people are using the Lightning to USB adapter, but your single USB input is already in use.

The Lightning to AV-HDMI adapter may work, but I would check with Wyred4Sound, as I2S connections via HDMI ports don't have a standard wiring configuration.  Wyred recommends the Lightning to USB adapter.

Others use an Apple Airport Express to stream from the iPhone and then digital optical out to the DAC.  That limits you to 16/44.1, but would give you wireless connectivity from multiple Apple devices.
