Normally all you have to do is change your password and you are good to go.

I can't get back in to change it. This happened to me before with a yahoo account. They got in and changed my security settings. Yahoo was unable to grant me access again.

Wish they could protect email accounts like they do CC accounts. If there is unusual activity shut it down and notify the account owner.

I have a feeling it may not a random thing. I've been doing some reading and it appears to be pretty easy to get into someones email if you know what you're doing. Maybe I'm just being paranoid though.

Best,

Ruben

There actually could be consequences - http://communications-media.lawyers.com/privacy-law/email-hacking-is-a-serious-crime.html

However, in practice, the companies don't want to pursue things as it is easier just to give you a new email.  It's a shame.  I understand that they estimate we are approaching 4 billion email accounts worldwide (where consumer accounts make up about 75% of those accounts and that presents a problem of numbers).

Sorry man. That's no fun at all. Let me make a suggestion.  Go and open up a Google apps account (free for personal or a small fee for business). Their email service is the best and they do a very good job with security including an out of band authentication method (text to your cell phone) if you're trying to make certain changes or if you're accessing your account from a new machine or device.  You also get some nice other features for your business as part of the service too.

Also, use apps to access your email and not web browsers.  That can help avoid problems too.  Message me direct if you have any questions. Glad to help.
