Magnepan MG12/ 1.7 comparison
« on: 10 Dec 2014, 02:38 pm »
I picked up some MG12's from another member here awhile back. My first time listening to planers. These were in great shape, sound was great and the price was a steal.
After looking around I found that there is a dealer a few blocks from my son's house so I made an appointment to give the 1.7's a listen.

How will the 1.7 sound in comparison to the MG12? Will the SQ be significant enough to hear?
What can I expect?

Thanks

A larger soundstage will be noticeable if nothing else.

Thanks Steve,
the 12's have a decent soundstage in my room.
Sounds like it might not be worth the price.

I can't answer that one for you.
To my ears they sound very similar to the 1.6s - on some recordings the 1.6s actually sounded better.
One thing that the .7 series does is come alive at lower volumes so that's something to consider.

That is good to hear. I'm going to go for a listen anyway.
Thought I would upgrade if the 1.7's were better across the board.
I'm actually very surprised how well the MG12's do in my 12X18X8 room.
Thanks again!

I just remembered one last thing as I sat listening to some Zappa instrumental material: as you go up the ladder with their models you get increased resolution.  You'll hear details on the 1.7s which weren't apparent on the MMG/12s, you'll hear additional material on the 3.7s and there is a jump up with the 20.7s as well.
That's what the money buys along with increased bass, larger soundstage and the ability to play easily at high volumes.

SteveFord, thanks for your input.
Did have a chance to hear the 1.7's at Audio Consultants in Hinsdale, Il.. Barry was very helpful during my time there.
Of course the 1.7 sounds better. Not by a huge margin but enough so that I will place an order in the next few months.

Did not jump in at this point as I have been looking to upgrade to a full frame dslr.
Being retired is awesome but that fixed income thing really gets in the way.

Thanks again!

With the 1.7i coming out you can expect some real bargains on the 1.7s in the near future so maybe waiting isn't such a bad idea after all.

Or ask him to discount the 1.7 enough to pay for the upgrade. I wonder what the dealers with 3.7s did when the 'i' upgrade was announced. Did they ship the unmodded to Magnepan, offer discounts or what?
