How to Sell My CD Collection
« on: 4 Dec 2014, 03:44 pm »
Hi All,

What's the best way to sell my entire CD collection?  In a perfect world, I'd like to sell the whole thing in one block since I don't have time to do individual sales.  Amazon seems to have very low prices.  Anyone have experience with alternatives?

Thanks.

Give us a bit more information please. How many? Genre? Things like that matter a lot to anyone collecting music. Very few people want someone's complete collection and that drives price down.

Location?  If it's a bunch, pickup might make the most sense.

If some of your CDs are rare, they may get some return. But I doubt selling your entire collection, if you are lucky enough to find a buyer which I doubt, would net you <$1 per disc.

Ebay is where the buyers are...but be warned you are limited to charging $3 per disc shipping by Ebay rules. That will not likely cover your ebay/paypal charges plus shipping envelope plus actual shipping cost (even for media mail). I won't even try ebay unless I can get $10+ for it.

Do what I did, donate them all to your local library.

Keep in mind that we all rip our cd collection (and DVD and SACD, if possible).  This is considered legal (especially unprotected recordings like cds) if you are keeping them for archive/backup, and is usually easily categorized under most country's Fair Use rules.  However, if you then sell your physical discs, you are required, by law, to remove the backups (rips).  That is a technical nit, but illegal to sell or give away cds and keep the rips, nonetheless.

I'd create a list of what you have and then let people buy chunks of them (say min 10 CDs) and price them according to how many they buy.   That is the most practical way to do it.

Yeah, that is a good idea. Send me the list first, and I'll at the very least 10.

Another option is to sell everything at once to a used record store in your area.

Zia Record Exchange has many locations in Phoenix, Tucson and Las Vegas.

Bookman's Entertainment Exchange has locations in Tucson, Phoenix, Mesa and Flagstaff:

Whatever these exchanges don't take drop off at a thrift store.

I'd try putting the lot up on your local craigslist at whatever the total of $1-2 per disk adds up to. If there's no takers after a month, take the collection to your local used record store. Whatever they don't take donate and take the tax deduction.

Sadly in the era of free to almost free music most CDs have little to no value. And going through the hassle to catalog and sell individually takes more time than it's worth (in my experience).

I cherry picked and sold the valuable items on ebay.  The rest I got $1 apiece for at a used music store.

Huh? Ripping one's own digital collection (or helping AC folks rip theirs) is one thing;  posting publicly of having an intention to then sell the discs cuz one doesn't need them anymore...something entirely different.  I thought it was worth a heads up. Clearly you didn't.

Syrah went off line immediately after posting and hasn't been back since, so we're talking to ourselves.

Good point Ted.

One of my audio club buds has offered a couple of times to let me rip 6TB of music (versus my puny 0.2 TB collection).  Of course I declined out of respect for the artists and being a law abiding citizen.  For that reason, I'll always retain the original CD's.  (I'm old, so may never go to higher formats, and have never bought music via electronic media.)
