Why you replaced ____ DAC with a ______ DAC ?
« on: 2 Dec 2014, 11:17 pm »
I have seen several people selling off some pretty high end DACs.
QB9 and PS Audio, Also Benchmark HGC

I am wondering what people are replacing them with?

Why you replaced ____ DAC with a ______ DAC ?

I currently have a metric Halo LIO8 which replaced a Burson HA160D. The LIO8 had much better tonality, could hear the wood of instruments and the texture of strings. Midrange and resolution was noticeably better. The Burson sounded harsh and flat by comparison.

What Did you replace your high-end DAC with?

This thread deserves a chance.

I make my own DACs using various kit parts, so I do not really replace DACs per se, so much as adding upgrades.  I build DACs based on the Twisted Pear Audio modules (currently B-IIIse/Legato2 based) and the biggest upgrade so far was going to Salas Shunt regulators for the two digital pre-regulators, and the bi-polar supply for the analog output stage.

I think a lot of people make lateral moves in DACs, often to get additional features (like DSD).  Then there are those who might make a real upgrade, say from a Auralic Vega to a dCS stack, etc.
