Logitech SB3
« on: 13 Nov 2014, 10:51 pm »
Hi Guys:

 I DON'T GET IT !!!!

     I have two SB3's.
Logitech quit selling them a few years ago. This morning my SB3 Logitech media server icon said there were updates.
So I did the updates. No problem.
I DON'T GET IT!!!!! :duh: :duh: :duh: If Logitech has discontinued this product why are there updates?

                                                                    Cheers
                                                                 Charlie

I am still sad that the hardware development stopped.  I installed the LMS update this evening.

Still running an SB3 in one system and a hacked Pogoplug acting as one in another setup.

It's just too good to die.  The squeezebox community actively supports the product and Michael Herger/Logitech is supporting & doing development of LMS.  The current beta version of LMS - 7.9 - actually has some nice new features.  He's also been actively working to decouple LMS and Squeezeboxen from the mysqueezebox.com site which many felt would be the first thing to go away.  Yet it's still working.

And if you've got an old iPhone, iPad, android phone, linux box, windows computer, numerous hacks, etc...  you can easily download LMS for free and have a totally functional squeezebox setup for next to nothing.  And, of course, you can still find a Squeezebox Touch, SB3, Duet. Radio, Boom or even a Transporter on ebay.

If you're interested/curious, definitely spend some time on forums.slimdevices.com.... it's still a strong and vibrant community.

There's not really much official server development going on. This was a minor update, mostly to address compatibility issues with Mac OS 10.10 Yosemite. As someone in the Squeezebox forums said: "But on what happened for 7.7.4? Some hotshot at Logitech probably updated his Mac to Yosemite". Here's the  7.7.4 changelog.

However... Logitech still employs one developer, who has been working quite a bit on an unofficial (community, open source) branch of the server. Actually, TWO unofficial branches.

7.8.0 has been released as a safe, unofficial release. Updates continue in the 7.8 branch, with 7.8.1 being the beta version of those updates, available as nightly builds.

7.9 is the development branch, with many new features and a lot of performance optimizations.

I've been running 7.9 for quite a while. Some really good stuff. Here's the 7.9 changelog showing most of what has been done in 7.8 and 7.9.

Interesting -- I've seen the LMS update pop up on my laptop, but I've been avoiding it since the version I'm running has been so stable. I'm not sure there's any point in upgrading?
