How do you wire up the LED?
« on: 10 Sep 2004, 07:52 am »
Have 2 blue 3mm LED for my AKSA100. Other than soldering, is there any alternative? Something like a clip or tiny adaptor but I can't find any. I am looking for an easy way to remove/attach the LED wire.

TIA,
Sam

Found it.

Something call "2 Pin 0.1 Header with Crimp Pins - 2.54 pitch". Jaycar stock number HM3402. They fit the 3mm LED perfectly.

If you are getting it, make sure you solder the connecting wire first before pushing the contact into the housing.

Wow, the durability cycle is 25 though.

That seems to be a rather small number of insertion / removal cycles :o

For my other projects, I soldered Cat. 5 wires directly to the LED legs (using a clip-on heatsink to protect the LED), and cut the wires somewhere along the way, using a Molex connector to join them again.

The Molex connectors may have a greater durability cycle, but I could be wrong

I normally solder the LED to either CAT5 wire or other thin wire.  Dropper resistor should be in the positive wire;  cathode of LED goes to ground.

A two pin plug is quite unnecessary, but be sure to solder the LEDs swiftly and cover the joint with heatshrink tubing up to the body of the LED.

Ah
a lttle q .
How much volt do you need?

meanining how big must the dropper R be with the (for instance AKSA 55) 36 volts rail?

Hi Kyrill,

Excellent calculator;  thanks for sharing it!

Pretty straightforward stuff:  deduct 2V from the rail voltage, pick the current desired (3mA for a green or red LED, 0.2mA for a HE blue LED), divide the mA into the deducted dropped voltage (in this case 48V for a 50V 100W AKSA rail) to get the kilohms of the dropper resistor.

Cheers,

Hugh

The pin plug is design to take pin much thicker than the LED's so the plug  should last a lot longer. Even if I need to get a new one, it is only NZ$0.60.  A lot cheaper than a new LED and a lot less hessle than soldering.
