I have some 36,,, 78 shellac LPs, but I do not have a 78 player. I am not sure if I should keep them. Any thoughts?

Cheers

Steve,
You might want to read these http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=126462.msg1334178#msg1334178  & http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=106871.msg1095449#msg1095449 for 78 info.
There are a variety of Thorens, Lenco, Dual, and Technics turntables that support 78 RPM.  But you will need a 78 RPM specific stylus.

Thanks Ken. I considered and decided to either rid through the trading post (already posted), or trash it and a Scott receiver.

Cheers

Hi, Steve.  I just purchased a restored 1906 HMV Gramophone Model 3 from Mumbai, India, you can borrow.  It plays 78's and you have to change the needle after every record, but you don't need no stinking electricity.  It uses elbow grease, instead.  It actually sounds OK with my 78's and it looks so cool with it's painted external horn.

FYI, the best way to clean them is with denatured alcohol

Per Vapor Audio,

You say that you believe the best way to clean 78s is with denatured alcohol. But how do you use it? Wipe them off with a rag soaked in denatured alcohol? Apply it as the fluid when you use a record-cleaning machine? Please enlighten us.

I have about a thousand 78s, and use them, with my work in writing liner notes for classical CDs. So I'm always looking for ways to get a cleaner disc.

I'd have liked to have obtained the trove of shellacs that was being given away, but I presume they've already gone in the trash, with the Scott receiver?

Your advice will be appreciated.

And it occurs to me: No one can say that shellac is "vaporware"!

Very best,

Hi Jr Member,

Duane Goldman (AKA The Disc Doctor) has a solution and set of brushes he specifically formulated to clean 78s. Here's the link;
http://www.discdoc.com/p1.html

Duane is a local guy. Last I talked to him, he was living out in Creve Coeur. You can save shipping and pick it up at his place. It's worth the trip too. He has a KILLER Victrola. This isn't one of the traditional stand up models. This thing is huge and utilizes an exponential horn that wraps through the cabinet. It will actually do bass, unamplified. It's really cool and he's a hard core 78 guy. The Library of Congress uses his 78 cleaning solution before archiving 78s.

Hope that helps.

Dear Scott,

Thank you for the recommendation. I shall follow through.

It never ceases to amaze me the number of audio manufacturers right here in Saint Louis, from John Hillig to Keith Herron to Chris Hoff to ... well, this is even where Vibrapods are made!

Meanwhile, I do yet hope to get out there and let you impress me and my uxorial companion with an excursion in your old Ford! I'm looking forward to it.

All the best,

Francis Baumli

I'd love to hear Duane's Victrola...any chance we can talk him into hosting a GAS session ?

Dear GAS members,

I talked with Duane a few days ago, and I believe he is out of town this week. But he'll be back, and yes, it would be great to hear someone who really knows the 78 format thoroughly show us what it can do. I have about 2000 78s, but I commit the heresy of playing them, not on a Victrola, but on a Thorens TD-124 with a Stanton cartridge.

This would be a learning experience for us, and since Duane sells 78 cleaner and other accessories, it would be a good way to throw our support his way. We have many audio manufacturers right here in Saint Louis, and I would like to see all of us lend support to our local manufacturers and distributors when we can.

So let's "lean on him" and see what he is up for!

With thanks for the suggestion,

Francis Baumli

Hi Dave,

Enjoyable having you visit. Been awhile since I met you at Bob's get together a few years ago. I hope you had enough time for Avanti's (esp their bread), as well as other necessities in Peoria.

Cheers
