VMPS SWITCHES TO LAMBSWOOL!

Thanks to zybar I had opportunity to take an mls cabinet RM40/TRT into my soundroom with lambswool stuffing on the mids, a few days after hearing the same speaker with fiberglass behind the mid panels.

There is no doubt in my mind the lambswool is a step forward in clarity and naturalness. It is also clear lambswool is not the choice for the bass section, being not reactive enough for good LF absorption.

This improvement is good enough to go into our entire line at no extra cost, if I can negotiate a quantity price with the vendor. In the meantime all VMPS Ribbon owners can buy lambswool from Madisound for $10lb. The RM 40 requires 3 lbs for both speakers, an RM 30 or RM2 should need 2 lbs. A 626 or RM1 will require only 1lb for both speakers. The RM/X needs 4lbs per pair. To gain access to the mid subenclosure use a Philips #1 screwdriver and go slowly removing the silver screws, since it's easy to strip the #4 screwheads. Remove the fiberglass carefully so as not to tear the wiring. Then stuff in the wool and replace the panels.

Another cheap, effective mod! No xover change needed.

If you have RM40's and haven't considered the mls cabinet upgrade, do it. You'll have an entire new and improved speaker.

Luckily, my friend bought it for me for Christmas! It's by far the most used tool I own. When I received my RM40s, for instance, my Panasonic cordless drill kept stripping the screws that held together the packing. The Snap On screwdriver came to the rescue!

Thanks for the credit Brian, but it actually goes to Ric Shultz of EVS. Ric told me about this tweek and I also heard the improvement in my current pair of RM 40's.

I can't wait to get my new African Ebony 40's!! Man they are going to be SWEET!!!

I was only able to fit about 1 lb into each RM/X. The subenclosure behind the mids isn't very big. Tried putting more in but it would protrude out through the baffle openings and figured it wouldn't be ideal having it pushing on the rear of the drivers.

I took a peek inside a pair of MLS African Ebony's while at the VMPS factory. The new cabinets are definitely a winner. Top-notch construction, includes sound coating, internal bracing, an excellent veener and finish. You just can't go wrong with the new cabinets, a definite improvement. I haven't listened to the old vs. new cabinet, but I have to think that there are some improvements in sound quality from the cabinet construction alone.

I did not notice this before but my RM40's center panel (mids and spiral tweeters) was one big recessed/routed section, while the newer cabinets and the MLS cabinets have individual cutouts for each neo-panel.. Nice touch.

These cabinets may be made in another country, but when I walked in, Big B was hand-soldering a set of auricap crossovers on his bench. Still hand made in the good ol USA.

Is this relevant to the subwoofers as well? And if so, how much should be added to the larger sub?

1/2 lb per speaker seems to be a lot. I tried 1/4 lb and it wasn't easy to pack in the small mid enclosure.

Does this mean I have to order another lb of wool for my RM40's?

I've have already done the modification with the 2 lb's of wool that Zybar instructed. Does the RM40's really need more than 2 lb's?

The factory uses 1 and 1/4 lb in each RM40?
That comes to 2 and 1/2 lb per pair?
