question on x-over points using 'PRO' speakers
« on: 12 Oct 2014, 01:10 pm »
I realize that using 'PRO' speakers is usually frowned upon when used in a home type setting, but for me they "work"...anyways,my question concerns which high pass filter(OFF,110,120) I should be using on my Yamaha DXR10 powered speaker tops in conjunction with my single RCF 902-AS powered subwoofer. Right now I am going directly into my sub and using it's 120HZ cross-over point and from there(Output) going straight to my tops.... which HPF should I be using there on my 10" tops to get the best bass?....I can use OFF,110,or 120? Thanks,Huck

Hi Huck,

What works works :)

Personally I would let the sats roll off mechanically so that would be OFF. That would allow you to set a lower crossover point on your sub. For me, the lower the sub XO point the better most especially if you are using just one sub. YMMV.

Have fun!

Thanks, but not sure I follow....if I run the tops on OFF,will they be running full-range,or will the sub's x-over set at 120, only allow the tops to go from 120 on up and the sub from 120 on down, even though the HPF in the tops is off(full-range)? Thanks, but still learning about filters(low and high pass) and x-overs. Thanks!

On OFF, the tops will go as low as they naturally can, then you try and catch the roll off frequency and slope of the tops with the sub's setting. These settings are independent of the tops. Let me look over your Yamaha monitor's specs. Give me a couple of minutes.

Specs say low end frequency response is -10dB in the fifties so amplitude should be dropping like a rock from about 100Hz. That's where you can start to try filling in with the subs.

Thanks! I tried running the top's HPF set at 120 and my RCF sub x-over at 120 and it seems to sound pretty good in my 12 x24 x8' high listening room.
Yamaha says to use 100 or 120 as the HPF when using a sub....they don't specify if it's  their own make of sub or some other, but since my sub has a  80 and 120 x-over,I chose 120 and it seems to work o.k. for now. Thanks

Going to change up a few things, maybe tomorrow I will try running my top's HPF on 'OFF' and my RCF sub x-over at 80hz,down from 120hz and see (hear) what that sounds like. Huck

Right now, I prefer the sound when crossing over my sub at 80hz and my HPF on my DXR10 tops at OFF position, bass seems to be tighter.Huck50

Crossing over a sub over 100Hz might lead to you being able to pinpoint where in the room it's coming from, which is generally not a good thing.

I prefer to run subs even lower than 80Hz, but it depends on how much can be asked of your main speakers, as well as the sub :)

I didn't really find any problems with being able to localize where the sub is at a x-over of 100,but the bottom seems tighter crossing over at 80hz.
