Yup. Old news and don't forget the up and coming K&K Audio version which is an order of magnitude better design. It will independently drive both coils in a hysteresis synchronous motor with variable frequency and apply the appropriate phase shift for optimum vibration performance.

There is a discussion on the vinyl asylum as to why it is superior by Mark Kelly. You get what you pay for:

But it is SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper than many manufacturers and better than the VPI SDS. If you want to compare, think of the serious supply that Basis provides for their tables ($$$thousands). By comparison Kevin's design is excellent while inexpensive. The devil is in the details with pictures:

Anand.

Reviving an old thread here.  But does anyone know if the K&K design for this took off?  I emailed them but did not get a reply.

I'd love to try implementing something like this on my VPI.

These guys seem to offer a DIY solution, although that seems a bit out of my DIY skills.  Wiring a motor I can do.  This I'm not so sure.

Anyone out there know of a phase shifting design for sale?  Any pro / semi-pro mod guys want to give one of these a go for me?

There's no mention of it on KK site.

Phoenix Engineering is generally considered the best available at this time.  They've come out with another controller for higher wattage motors.

There is - second paragraph of the home page.

It seems to be the preferred approach, but commercial products have stayed away from it because it requires removing the phase shift capacitor from the motor.  And then playing with the phase shift until the motor reaches its most quiet.

The only other commercial device I've seen that does this is the one made by Basis.  I would buy that except for one problem.  $4k!

I've read that this helps overcome a problem that causes AC synchronous motor noise, small motor-to-motor and capacitor variations which cause noise because the phase shift is never precisely correct for that motor.  Seem like a persuasive approach.  If only someone could sell one south of $4k.

It's not THAT difficult to remove a capacitor and connect four wires properly - two neutrals, two hots, one with shifted phase.

I don't know much about phase....or history  :( for that matter, but the Phoenix gear works very well with my Lenco motor.   There are at least two versions of the Phoenix, one for lower wattage draw motors, like the VPI, and one for higher wattage draws like the Lenco...initially the Eagle was for higher wattage draw motors and was rated for motors up to 15 watts, then the Eagle was re-done to accept motors drawing up to 25 watts...the Lenco draws somewhere around 20.

If you order a Phoenix to control a Lenco or other high wattage motor, make sure you get the 25 watt unit, which will, by the by, easily run the motor on your VPI if you have one, too.

I have discovered it is important to calibrate the Eagle, following the instructions in the manual...it is not just plug and play, although pretty close.
