What's the best piece of gear you have seen? This could mean the best looking, best sounding, best new idea or best new technology, etc.

For me, I think the new Gallo Reference 3's cover all of the above.

Best looking I would give the nod to Shanling. I would love a glass and stainless steel rack full of their gear!

Best new technology would be the maturing of digital amps. I'm still amazed with my little Sharp, and it sounds like with the JVC stuff, it keeps getting better!

Walker SST - it is easily worth the $70. After application, my system sounds like it has major component upgrades.

See "Critics Circle" for more comments.

Design - The Quad II amp. Simply the most ingeniously simple and clever circuit of its kind ever devised.

Looks-   I like wood, so well fashioned speakers are always pleasing.  Totem and Meadowlark always have nice finishes.    I also really liked the southwest asthetic of Ron Welborne's  Moondog amp.

Sound - this is tough to say absolutely.  The original Quad ESL driven by the Quad II i right up there.  The Well Tempered Reference is about the best analog I have heard and Wadia is tops on the digital side.  The Art Audio Jota is about the best amp I have had in my systyem.  Special mention has to go to the Jolida 102 though.  Simply stunning sound that I expect would be world class with some good mods.  This amp led me to focus on EL84 designs in my DIY quest.  IMO, a well designed EL84 pp amp may well be the ultimate all-a-round speaker driver.

Thanks,
Rob

CL/5 two-way standmounted speakers (from about 20 years ago) from Irving M. Fried.  $500 for the kits, but a tough DIY cabinet (truncated pyramids with mass loaded transmission line for the mid/bass driver).  A friend built them, but never finished them before messing with the crossovers.  Incredible sound, unbelievable deep/musical bass from 15 inch high speakers.  IMO it was Bud Fried's best design, and I've used his speakers for 25 years.

Just to be a little contraversial...

Technics 1200/1210 MKII Turntable and it's variants.

Arguably the most reliable, well built, and proven piece of audio equipment on the face of the earth, and also one of the most popular of all time. The core design hasn't changed from it's MKII variant in over 20 years.

The Nagra monoblocks. They remain to this day, without question the best component I have heard by a long shot!!

Interesting call on the 1200's, I used those for years as a DJ in a campus pub, but cannot speak to their sound quality, I have never had one hooked up to anything but a PA.  Certainly they were a robust TT, that could handle a good beating...

As for the best I have heard, I have a 2 way tie.

The first time I heard sound that I could not believe was not actually IN the room was a Maggie (sorry was a Noob at the time, and do not recall the model, but they were floor standing, and at least 5'8, and around 2+ feet wide) driven by YBA components.  Rebecca Pidgeon was in the room, breathing on my face...

The second time, and since they were more than 10 years apart it is impossible to judge which was better, was the Dyn Temptations (those are the multiway, tall floorstanders right?) driven by VTL monoblocks, and a Cary cd player.  This time it was Leonard Cohen, who absolutely refused to not be exactly between the speakers, even when I was WAY out of the sweet spot.

In both cases, I cannot comment on what it was in the system that afforded such overwhelmingly tangible sound, but had I had the 100K either time...

Interesting question.

Best piece of gear I have seen would be the Gryphon Antileon.

Best piece of gear I have heard is without a doubt the Halcro monos.

Best looking:  Shanling CDT-100 CD player.  Simply beautiful.
Best amp:  Acoustic Reality eAR amps.
Best preamp:  Still looking...
Best speakers:  TAD Model-1 - heard at CES and was BLOWN AWAY (but costs $40,000 if I recall)

I like Jeff Rowland stuff for looks and sound:

Personally, though, I'd rather he'd bring out a line of cheap, black aluminum cabinets with the same electronics.
