Amp input - 9B vs 4B
« on: 9 Sep 2014, 03:21 pm »
Hi all,

Quick question: If I was using a maximum of 160 watts per channel into a 4 ohm speaker (well within the 9B's capacity), would I hear any difference between the 9B and the 4b? For the sake of this question, assume the speaker is the Bryston Middle T.

More headroom with the 4B. I am assuming larger capacitor banks. So the 4B would outperform the 9B. Lower volumes maybe not. Have to try it out to see.

A couple extra watts of Class A operation might translate into purer sound at low volumes?

I have both and at lower volume levels there is a slight difference but mostly only noticeable in an A/B comparison.  For me I hear a slight change on female vocals with the 9 sounding like the vocalist has their hands "cupped" around her mouth that isn't there with the 4, or the 2bsst that I have as well. This is with my Gallo Refs and isn't as noticeable with any of my other speakers.

At louder levels the 4 sounds more dynamic with better control of the lowest registers.  Having recently purchased a pair of Middle T's, the dynamics are more apparent as well as the increased  bass control with the 4.  Again, this is at louder volume levels with more dynamic material.  The 9 is very satisfying but the 4 is more of everything.  At lower levels I actually really prefer the 2b, there is just something about that amp that brings out detail like no other.   If this is a 2 channel setup for you, I would go with the 4b and be done with it.  If you already have the 9, I would just relax and enjoy it.

Thanks for all the input.

My system is HT and 2ch combined. Between money, physical space, and WAF, I can swing a 4B-SST2 + something inexpensive for center/surrounds OR I can get a 9B-SST2 now and perhaps add a 4B-SST3 one day.

I can't demo a 9B-SST2 anywhere near where I live. I was able to demo a 4B-SST2 a year ago and was very impressed. So, I know I like the sound. I was just hoping to find solution based on input since I can't do a demo. It's a tough deal when you have to make choices when you can't demo the equipment.

Garrett, I had the same dilemma. I had a 4BSST, so I added another 4BSST and a 6BSST. Frankly, it's a bit of overkill for my 16x16 foot room. Depending upon your speakers, the 9B should be very satisfactory.

I'm leaning that direction Rich. I can always add the 4B-SST2 later, and I can actually demo that one before I add it!

I went with a 9B-SST as my 5.1 powerhouse, and later added a 4B-SST2 when I updated my fronts. The 9B-SST now handles the sides and rears surrounds as well as my centre. I'm 70/30 2channel/7.1 home theatre listening - the amps are solid and performance oriented!
