TT question
« on: 27 Aug 2014, 03:04 pm »
I have a chance to buy a vintage Pioneer PL-55x TT in excellent condition for $150.  Is it worth the money?  I am considering getting back into vinyl.  I would really like to spend about $3500 on a new TT, Cartridge and Phono Preamp but I want to upgrade my DAC first to a Wyred 4 sound DSD DAC or Bel Canto 3.5.  Is the TT worth the money?

I already have a Bellari VP-129 phono preamp that a friend gave me.  The TT would be used in my main system which consists of a BAT VK-51se preamp, Pass X250 amp and Magnepan 1.6 speakers.  I know that the TT is not on the same playing field as the rest of my gear.  I would probably drop in a $200 cartridge.

I can say the best thing I ever did for my system was to buy a vintage JVC QL-7 TT off of Craigslist for $180.00. Bought a used Vista audio preamp, and a used Goldring 1012GX cartridge and I couldn't be happier. Sounds so good I never listen to CD's anymore just Vinyl.

I’ve been looking at and wanting to buy a vintage turntables for a while now. If that Pioneer PL-55x
is in excellent shape like you say, I would say it’s worth the money.. I would prefer a belt drive unit
but it does look like a nice table.

Below is a link from Vinylengine with the specs on the Pioneer PL-55x
Good luck with the new table if you get it.
