VPI Classic 1 VS Scout II - Need feedback
« on: 17 Aug 2014, 02:39 pm »
Hi, I was initially looking at the differences between the Scout I and II but now am thinking about comparing the Scout II and Classic I. Has anyone heard these tables side by side? I have done enough research to know that the classic seems to be the warmer of the two tables and can introduce some motor noise BUT apparently has a slightly better arm...  anyhow, just looking for feedback here as both tables are in my line of sight.

I have a Classic I. Did not consider the Scouts at all. Absolutely fabulous 'table. NO noise of any kind from the motor in my system (all solid-state). I do get a little squeak from the belt on start-up.  I use a Sumiko Blackbird, no mat, and always use the clamp.  Very happy.  I think the Classic I is plenty of table for all but the most expensive cartridges, and would likely sound better if used with the SDS, and the 3D arm.  These are in my upgrade path.  I do not mess with the azimuth (my table was set up by the vendor I used).  Highly recommended.

I also use a Classic but the Classic 2 , also as posted only noise I hear is at startup from belt . I'm using a  Soundsmith Zephyr MK/II Cartridge no mat .

I don't think you can go wrong with either table and a decent cart ...

Id say it's more of a case of cosmetics and form factor vs a big sound quality difference, with the Scout being much more compact and rack friendly.  The big sound jump I think is between the Classic 1 to the 3 - not the Scout's to the Classic 1/2.  I wouldn't even get the Scout 2 : I'd get the Scout 1.1, the Classic 1 or best yet, the Classic 3.

P.s. To all : baby powder rubbed on the belts often takes care of the belt squeaking. Or with enough use the squeak goes away.

I own a Classic I with a Dynavector 20X2L. Never heard a Scout. It was never in the running. I like wood. I considered the III, but it didn't sound twice as good to me. According to VPI an SDS is not necessary with a Classic TT . Money is best spent elsewhere, is what I was told. I checked this out with a KAB speedstrobe. If you need more speed accuracy, you've got serious OCD issues.
