New Open Baffle Designs

I'll start by saying I'm a bit Jealous of Wayne's OB-5 beautiful build. :green:

I so want to build a pair of OB-5's or 7's.

The problem is, my current speakers BG Radia 420FS use the neo 3 in full open baffle glory (no back cup). I don't want to take a step back in that regard. I have been playing with the Idea of using neo 10's as a mid and servo 8's or 12's below, but seem to run in to a common OB problem. Not enough baffle width to provide proper mid bass / lower mid range. If you turn the neo 10's sideways, and stack them you loose the wide dispersion and the wide sweet spot my wife and I prefer.

Danny, any thoughts of updating these classic designs to a "Signature level" model using full Open Baffle top to bottom? I'm thinking servo 8's below and an open neo 3 for a tweeter? Maybe even using your new copper clad mid/woofers?

I've been watching your MMTMM project with interest, but want the full, tight mid-bass and lower midrange tone that larger drivers seem to excel at. I'm in awe every time I hear the amazing tone quality and mid- bass / mid-range dynamics on my son's X-Statik's.

Just go for broke and buy one of these Serenity Acoustics OB Neo 10 Line Sources:

Or, the Mockingbird Audio Line Array:

Expensive up front, but you will have the best speakers in the world.

Both good Ideas Tyson, except for the "go for broke" thing. This hobby has already burned enough of my cash to buy a nice house in Iowa Park TX.

I have had the Epiphany 20/21's and the GR Research LS-9's. Just a bit too big for my room I'm afraid. The OB-5 / OB-7 is more my preferred size / price range.

Or you could wait and see how Danny's other OB offerings turn out. Talking about the X-
Optima, X-Otica and (IIRC?) the X-Treme kits that will be all open-baffle with servo sub options that Danny has been working on. Or perhaps waiting on is more correct since he's been waiting for the new servo amps for the 8" drivers to finalize/voice/complete these models.

those amps are in and available. I think the hold up now is a tweeter change.

Oh, right, that AMT tweeter that Danny and Hawthorne Audio developed. Forgot about that, thanks for the reminder.

The new tweeter will almost certainly require a CNC-made baffle (or at least the tweeter's waveguide) like the LGK MMTMM and larger LGK kits, so that must be worked out in addition to the new crossover changes.

EDIT: Danny do you have a new rough ETA for the availability of these new models? Speaking of the X-Otica, X-Optima, etc.

Early B.

Yeah, I'd certainly like to know more info, as well.

I listened to the Mockingbird line source (called the LSX on their website) at RMAF last year, and was quite impressed. Has the OB neo 10 line source ever been built? I recall that it would cost as much as a nice car or small house.

If I'm counting right, each speaker has 20 Neo 3's, 8 Neo 10's and 6 Woofers, so that's 40, 16, and 12 respectively per pair.

That's a huge chunk of change just for drivers. Add in Crossovers, Wiring, Amps (woofers), cabinets, assembly and overhead..... I would believe that they would be pricey.
