Cambridge Audio Dacmagic 100
« on: 10 Aug 2014, 06:58 pm »
My Schiit Bifrost DAC recently developed a problem (USB stopped working) so while it was on its way back to Schiit for repair  I took a flyer on the $300 Dacmagic 100 figuring I need a backup anyway and I was curious what a $300 DAC performed compared to a $600 DAC.

I have to say I'm extremely impressed with the Dacmagic 100 and frankly I'm amazed at the sound quality vs. the value/price point. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Dacmagic 100 to anyone looking for a truly satisfying cheap and cheerful HiFi experience.

In fact when I get the Bifrost back I may just sell it and step up to a Chord. Not that I haven't enjoyed the Bifrost but frankly in the sub $1k price range I think the Dacmagic 100 is pretty tough to beat. Highly recommended.

Cheers, :thumb:

I actually have been looking for a sub $1k dac for awhile now but I’m not sure which one would be best for me. I did own the
PS Audio DL lll Dac for a couple of years and while it didn’t sound bad, it wasn’t that involving to me.
I’ve sold that and have been dac-less for almost a year now.

I would like to try the Musical Fidelity M1Dac A in my main audio system, I think it might be a good fit but I haven’t made
a purchase at this time. I wouldn’t mind trying the DacMagic for my computer based headphone system though.

Thanks for the info..

Thanks for your impressions Morten.

Most of the people praise the Schiit's bifrost to be one of the best sub 1k Dacs. I guess they haven't used the Dacmagic 100. Good find, i will try to arrange a demo soon.

FWIW I traded from up an Oppo 95 to a Cambridge Audio 752BD which essentially uses the DACMagic in its audio stage and I am very happy with the sound for hi-res files and blu-ray concert playback.
I was never totally happy with the sound of the 95, finding it a bit harsh and strident and when I discovered that the 752BD uses the same chips as my Rega Apollo CDP (albeit with a different implementation) and that it had similar advanced capabilities as in the Oppo 105 (minus the headphone amp), I decided to try it.
It has a great liquid sound on all sources and once I add in the LPS from Oppomod, I hope to improve the sound even more.
Just my 3 cents worth.
