Rega P1 w/AT440mla cart height question
« on: 7 Aug 2014, 11:50 pm »
I have read that Rega carts have a different height than most others and if you use a different (non-rega) cart that the height may be wrong.  Do I need to add shims to the Rega for use with the AT440mla?

Rega carts are 14mm in height. So the general rule is adding the shim that is the  difference in height. I see that your cart is 17.3mm tall. A 2mm - 4mm shim would be needed. Everybody has a different taste, so listen, and and see what works for you.

Yup different tastes. When I had my Rega a 4mm height or 2 X 2MM is what I used worked well with all non Rega Cartridges. You can try  a lined index card to check parallel at the headshell only area since the arm is tapered.
Should be pretty close to level.

Added the Rega three point spacer set at 4mm.  I can't believe the difference!  More separation between instruments, more sense of transition between highs and lows.
Anyone else have this experience?

P.S. The only disadvantage to this setup is that I have to remove the dust cover when I play anything, as the counterweight hits the cover.

Cool, BUT I would think the Rega Cart on the Rega Table would be at the perfect height without a shim...guess not!
