Audiophile Vortexbox by Small Green Computer
« on: 2 Aug 2014, 06:27 pm »
Hi All,

I've been seriously considering this unit to use for audio playback. I looks to be a good one box source and with SOTM USB card could be hard to beat. I have a linear power supply, and plan to use it with the my Dspeaker Dual Core 2.0.

With a 2tb hard drive, and SOTM USB card it will come in around $1100.00 delivered.

Any thoughts and company comments?

Thanks

Can't help, but please keep us posted.  I'm in the market and at this point will probably just go with a Apple Mini and new DAC (need EQ for speaker baffle step, already have music ripped onto a HD from my iMac, would like to add PureMusic, and I'm a complete computer klutz).

I'm a computer klutz too and the A'phile Vbox looks to be a simple solution.
Wondering if it sounds good?  :dunno:

As a computer klutz I like the mini because of all the support out there, including JohnR's tutorial that I used to rip my CDs.

I was reading up on the Salk SoundStream player and one of Salk's "bullet points" is the claim that the absence of RF from a video output helps provide cleaner audio. Not sure that matters if you are doing the D/A convert externally.

I have been looking at the Raspberry Pi too but you gotta have some DIY mojo. This looks like a good turnkey solution at a relatively modest price.

My experience (with Apple computers anyway) is that slot load drives suck. If the drive is there solely for ripping purposes, a version without one would be a good idea IMO.

WTF is a SOTM USB card anyway?

A couple of good features of the SOTM USB card are, that it can be powered with a separate supply, and you can choose between data+power or data only output. This is a good feature if your dac internally powers the usb buss.

had my Vortexbox for about 4 years now i think...  i've never had an issue with playback, or any other use, and the convenience is excellent.  for ease of use, performance and cost, i dont think it can be beat.

Wouldn't you want the linear power supply also (which unfortunately does increase the price to about $1400)?

I already have a very good linear supply that will work with it, and I can purchase one for the SOTM card for less money than the one they are offering.
