Thanks to everyone who gave suggestions! :D   Cryotweak, that is one beautiful looking stand!  And in my favorite hardwood as well.  That must have cost a pretty penny to ship.  Dado5, I am thinking exactly along those lines for a media storage solution.  Alot of what I'm seeing looks cheaply made.  I like that granite shelf rack from Adona, but not sure if I'm willing to pay that much.  Right now I'm checking out the salamander line at audio advisor.  Possibly the Archetype 5.  Similar to the DIY rack at TNT-Audio but nicer looking than I would be able to make it!  Thanks again everyone.

I use a Salamander Archetype 5. I also placed various 1.5" thick granite and marble slabs underneath each of my my components (My rural NH town has a business that cuts granite, marble, and other stone for kitchen, baths, etc. I simply picked through the cutting discard piles and found rectangle remnants that were perfect for my components. Granite/marble cost = $0.00.) Thus, I have a solution that's akin to the granite shelf idea at a fraction of the cost. Best of luck in choosing and using your personal solution.

Various inexpensive solid surface alternatives exist for bases as sound     ening weights to be placed on top of components:

1.  Ceramic tile (up to 24 inch squares)

2.  Granite or Corian sink cut outs from slabs (although edging runs about $15 per lineal foot)

3.  Granite is also available as tiles

4.  Or you can make your own concrete slabs.  Concrete countertops are becoming a popular high-end option.  This isn't your dad's concrete.  Special admixtures, no large aggregates, and color tints can provide a very custom look thats limited only by your imagination.  Building forms and shopping is the toughest part.

I know you're not looking for DIY but if you change your mind Lumber Liquidators sells 1.5" thick maple butcherblock for a pretty reasonable price.

Yeah, I like nathanm's glossy finish too.  I built mine in '94, out of pine 2x6's - 3 laminated side by side to create the shelves that measure 24x16.5x1.5.  Then stained to match my red mahogany Totems, and happy ever since.

Since then I have read about others using a similar design, and they look good too - not sure what resonance concerns the pine creates as shelving, but I notice good results with isolating the digital front end 1 by 1 as I get the time and materials...
