Getting into vintage speakers
« on: 18 Jul 2014, 03:51 pm »
Hi there! I've been pretty interested in anything audio for a few years now and especially have noticed how much I love older speakers, especially my current pair of klipsch kg 4. I'm looking to upgrade but am not sure how to go about looking for older speakers. Any pro tips? Thanks in advance

Older designs tend to have deeper but flabbier bass. Note also that materials have improved.

Old speakers have old capacitors that may need to be replaced. But the foam/rubber driver surrounds are the first component to deteriorate (you can search for speaker reconditioning).

I'm with JLM on this one.  Vintage amps can be very good, old turntables also, but vintage speakers not so much.  Flabby bass and poor imaging were the norm.  Computer modeling and measurement software have raised the bar for speaker manufacturers.

Well, I didn't say deeper/flabby bass was all bad.   :)

Modern speakers can sound downright constipated in comparison.  But as we've tended to move into smaller rooms and closer to neighbors, less bass is probably more appropriate.

I'm trying out a tube amp and finally had to find my computer's EQ settings (from the solid state settings) and turn the bass back down (but "impressive" bass is still fun, and impressive).   :thumb:

Vintage amps will probably need a good once over to replace old caps and clean switches.
