My friend bought a used SL-1200MK2 and seller indicated that it needed a new tonearm cable. 1) What type of cable is required? RCA to RCA- Straight Din to RCA - 90 degree DIN to RCA
2) Any advice on taking off the bottom plate? It looks like quite a chore.
3) He has a low budget as he is a starving student and the unit that appears to be a best value is the Audioquest Tonearm Cable at $89.00 for sale at the Needle Doctor. Is there a "Best Value" cable for this application.
I would really appreciate any help I can get on this problem. He is new to the hobby and has the ears and passion to be a great listener and collector of vinyl. We all started somewhere. I wish my first table was a 1200. Steve
I wouldn't worry about stock appearance too much, it's not a collector piece, and a cable upgrade won't affect the value other than maybe upwards.
Installing a new cable may or may not affect the value, but if the 1200 isn't considered a collector piece, I don't know what is. It's no longer in production, they typically sell used for more than their retail price and a new one in a sealed box will sell for $1k-$2k or more. Several years ago you could find one in decent shape on just about any given day by looking at local craigslist ads. Not anymore.
